NO MORE WLIR

Letter regarding the end of WLIR

I've been listening to WLIR from when Larry the Duck and Steve 'the pistol' Jones were doing the morning show in 1986. I listened when it was WDRE and changed back to LIR.

I hope The Box is as good, but somehow I doubt it.

Re: NO MORE WLIR

This is from the website:

As WLIR moves off of the 92.7 dial position, a brand new TMO station will simultaneously hit the airwaves. 107.1 The Box (WLIR-FM), Long Island’s New Music Alternative, will provide cutting edge rock and modern alternative hits from artists such as Linkin Park, Blink 182, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Trapt, Nirvana, Maroon 5, the Beastie Boys, Audioslave, Korn, No Doubt and Sublime. Additionally, the station will continue ‘LIR’s tradition of fostering unique music from local artists and spinning new music first. The company’s other two stations, Party 105.3-FM (Dance) and 98.5-FM The Bone (Classic Hard Rock) will continue to broadcast their current formats.

Which I guess is OK but still. I will miss their 80's lunch hour. That was the best. I might have to start buying more cd's of the 80's bands I love now.

OMG! I had no idea! That's sad, I remember when it was WDRE. Will the new station keep the same DJs, like English MUffin? I listen to her on the way home from work. O well.

Re: NO MORE WLIR

I am so upset... I called my friend from the car to see why they were playing spanish music. I work on the border of Suffolk and from the little staticy that I could pick up of 107.1 it sounded like top 40 - no more depeche mode, new order, erasure... what am I going to do. I've listened to them since I was a kid.... I am depressed....just to top off a sucky week...2004 stinks so far!!!!!!

I didnt' like the English Muffin.

I loved the old DJ's like Malibu Sue (I remember when she wasn't even married) and Donna Donna and Larry the Duck and Denis McNamara.

Sigh....the 80's....LOL..

Re: NO MORE WLIR

Did anyone even know they were selling the station to Univision? Too bad we could have campaigned or something.

I think the family that owned LIR was losing money. But they own LI Press and 3 other stations. Get rid of The Bone or that hard rock station. It's not like there's none out there already. But LIR was the only place to hear old new wave. Maybe Hofstra radio will start up a new program for that genre now. They used to do some 80's programming.

So sad!! DH told me about it yesterday and I couldn't believe it. I'm out east, so I guess I should get the Box or whatever but it sucks that they just got rid of it. When we're further up island we listed to 94.3 (?) and sometimes they have a good 80's set - but not enough of the alternative 80's.

Re: NO MORE WLIR

Univision is buying the station from Jared and most likely it will become a hispanic format and a simulcast of WCAA (105.9 FM)

I work in radio ...

Re: NO MORE WLIR

Maybe I can convert a few of you who listen to alternative music to try WFUV, 90.7? It's my favorite radio station!!! They broadcast from Fordham University and are 100% member supported. They do NOT play mainstream music, but they play a lot of stuff by really talented musicians, both current and 'oldies'. This station is also where I first heard Norah Jones and Joss Stone MONTHS before anyone else did! I just really love them. If you have an appreciation for really good music, check 'em out!

www.wfuv.org

You can even listen online!

So Sad! Some of the DJ's are going to 94.3, Malibu Sue is one of them.

Re: NO MORE WLIR

A lot of the Air talent from WLIR move to WMJC-FM Island 94.3 Island so maybe 94.3 so maybe 94.3 will be like the old 92.7?
