I've been listening to WLIR from when Larry the Duck and Steve 'the pistol' Jones were doing the morning show in 1986. I listened when it was WDRE and changed back to LIR.
I hope The Box is as good, but somehow I doubt it.

I am so upset about this! I can't believe I didn't hear about this sooner! It must have been sudden otherwise i assume they'd have some sort of send off for the station....

Re: NO MORE WLIR
I know about the suddeness ... it was the regular station this morning on my way to work... when I got out of work it was all Spanish! I can only get 94.3 when I'm going to and from work because I live in Queens.
that is so sad...I'm glad I wasn't there to hear it...
but when I moved out to SD (there are big radio problems...b/c the big companies can broadcast from Mexico and not be regualted by the FCC) there is this one great indy radio station that reminds me of WLIR's younger years...(well mid 80s) I hope the Box does that for you guys...
Isn't Donna Donna on WBAB or 104.3?

I love this station! Did they even mention it on the air?!
No wonder why I tried to tune in on my way home tonight and all I heard was Spanish music!!! is that what's going to be played?

What about Ben Manilla, Dennis McNamara, Donna Donna .... should I go on??? I started listening in 1982!!!! Me (I grew up in Qns) and my friends in Bklyn had to get FM boosters or build contraptions just to get the station in!!!!
Very sad!!

Where the hell am I going to listen to my Depeche Mode now? I've listened to this station for about 15 years.

This does suck!!! I had no idea what was up with the spanish music while I was driving home tonight! I really loved listening to The English Muffin! on my way home. There is never going to be a station like LIR I am really sad. I rember reading a post on here a while back about this but I really didn't think it was going to happen.

Re: NO MORE WLIR
Jenn, just saw you posted about Depeche Mode too!!! My favorite band! I am so sad- sometimes they would do blocks on the radio and play 3 songs in a row... ah, those were the days.

I am sooo upset!!! I had NO CLUE about this - they played such a great Depeche Mode set this morning!! I have been listening since 1987 and where in the world are we going to hear all the great obscure 80's songs that give me a funny nostalgic feeling every time I hear them? this completely sucks!!

Re: NO MORE WLIR
I work at Jarad Broadcasting. I'm actually here right now. I'm sad about the station too, but the deal was just too good to refuse.
For those on the East End, the Jocks schedule for the Box is on www.wlir.com. If you liked English Muffin, she's got the almost same time slot on the new format too (2p-6p).
I'll explain as much as I can to you with an FM.
Jenny and Rachel - Who do you know here???????????????
Oh, Island 94.3 has our old program director, Jon Daniels, too. They're kinda LIR-ish these days.
Whoever mentioned WFUV - what a great station. You get really amazing variety over there.

Yeah! My DH and I were driving home Thursday night from a holiday party and I turned on WLIR 92.7 and Spanish music was playing. I was like W T F???? I kept checking the radio and thought- did I have that much to drink?
I am sad. They are a part of LI! I grew up with them!
I guess I will check out het new station. Hope it's just as good!
PS- what happened to the English Muffin at 5:00? Did she move too?
ETS: LOL! I just re-read rachel's post above and got my answer! Thanks rachel!

Maybe I can convert a few of you who listen to alternative music to try WFUV, 90.7?
I do actually. I don't like all the songs they play on CityFolk but it's programmed on my car radio.
And I listen to the irish shows on there. I like that stuff what can I say. LOL And sundays my mom ALWAYS had it on so to me it's not a Sunday if I don't hear it for a little bit.
