no ring to show for

i feel so bad, my good friend got engaged, they were together when times were great and times were bad...she lives with her FH, but she has no ring she doesnt want something small and not nice ...i guess...and she doesnt want her FH to spend thousands of dollars cuz he just got laid off from work 3 weeks ago...and no one is even taking her being engaged seriously

i just feel bad for her,i know the ring is a great aspect of getting engaged, i remember when i saw mine, my jaw dropped i was just ecstatic and crying and 101 things went thru my mind ...lol

i told her to get a high quality C.Z engagement ring to pass off...until they can afford a real one...than she said she doesnt know if people do that, and she doesnt wana be fake...etc....

ppl started asking her 'oh let me see ur ring' and she has nothing yet....so i just told her to get a temporary replacement, was i wrong to even suggest that idea? i have no idea if ppl actually even do that...sorry to say...

everytime were together, she just stares at other ppls hands...[rings] ....

Re: no ring to show for

i have a friend who did the cz thing ... it wasn't a big deal, she told me when she showed me the ring, i'm not even sure i would have noticed if she didn't point it out.

they bought a house together right around the time they got engaged.

some times its more important to move forward together in life than it is to wait for all the unimportant pieces to fall into place.

i think you made a good suggestion ... it'll make her feel less self conscious when they go on vendor appointments and she looks for a wedding gown, etc. plus, maybe her friends and family will take the engagement more seriously.

there are some really good 'fakes' out there!!!

Hmm, tough one!! I can see people not taking her serious, I have a friend that's been telling everyone, even my PARENTS that her & her bf are getting engaged soon... only she's been saying it for about 4 years, lol. Maybe suggest getting a smaller inexpensive ring, and she can upgrade after the wedding is over. It doesn't matter what the ring looks like but getting a fake ring could wind up much more embarassing if someone can tell. I'd rather have people commenting that my ring may be a little small than a little fake,

That stinks that people are blowing off her engagement just b/\c she doesn't have a ring. Some people are so superficial. If it would make her feel better about being engaged she should definitely get a CZ or moissanite ring until they can afford something else. Its a drag that people can't just be happy for her.

i'd definitely go with a CZ for now... i honestly don't think anyone will notice!

just tell them not to get one too outrageous! (like you don't want a 10 ct. CZ which is then replaced by a 1 ct real diamond). get one that matches whatever they're likely to get when they DO get one!

like this is a tiffany-style CZ from overstock.com for about $35.

Re: no ring to show for

I feel badly that she wants one so badly... and I feel badly that people around her don't seem to understand that an engagement ring does not make an engagement.

I don't have an engagement ring... and HONESTLY I don't want one. People didn't believe me when I told them that at first... but it is sincerely the truth.

FH and I have 2 children, a mortgage, a dog and 2 cars... a diamond ring to 'prove' that I am engaged is not something I can justify spending cash on. PLUS I see it as extra money for the wedding. I thought buying a house was a better place to put our money! I tell people I have an engagement house!

The fact that she isn't asking him to put himself in hock to get her a big diamond tells me that she really loves him and that she has her priorities straight. That is a couple that will make it a lot farther than some girls I know who INSISTED that their FH get them something BIGGER, FANCIER and MORE.

Tell your friend that the diamond might be nice... but the REAL ring is the circle of gold that he will slip over her knuckle as a symbol of fidelity to his vows on their wedding day.

ETA: NOBODY doubted our engagement based on the fact that I didn't have a ring... believe me, once she starts dropping deposits on halls, dresses and other crap nobody will doubt her either!

QVC had diamonique that is absolutely stunning and you would never know. They set it in white gold and yellow gold- some even platinum. I say go for it! Who's gonna know the difference?

I agree that a ring does not make an engagement.
I think people have just become acustomed to this. Usually when someone says im engaged they say immediately 'let me see the ring' I am guilty of this. I would definately tell her to get a CZ or diamonique ring. NO one is going to examine it under a microscope. And tell your friend Congrats

Yes Diamonique is definitely the way to go! My mother and I have several pieces that we use while traveling, and noone says a thing. You would never be able to tell.

Re: no ring to show for

Maybe your friend and her boyfriend should go shopping together for the setting she is going to use when she gets her real diamond. SHe should first research the shape and size of the diamond she wants and buy the setting based on whether or not it can hold that type of diamond. She could buy the setting just for now and put a synthetic diamond (like cubic or diamonique) in it and then replace it with a real diamond when they can afford it.

Re: no ring to show for

FH's mother is a jeweler & his brother was in a similar situation when he got engaged. He bought his wife a CZ in a beautiful setting. [Keep in mind- his wife works at Mercedes as a receptionist and would get remarks ALL DAY LONG about how beautiful her ring is from all these rich clients!]

There is NO visible difference between a CZ and a diamond to the naked eye. only a jeweler would know the difference if they looked at it through a magnafying lense.

Another thing u can do- get a setting with real diamonds in it, a setting you really like that will want to have forever, and replace it with a diamond when he can... honestly noone with know the difference. Just make sure you dont go overboard with a huge CZ and then not be able to replace it with a diamond!!!! And diamonds will be high priced until about march because of the holidays and valentines day

ETA: it is TERRIBLE that noone is taking her seriously Let her know that LIW girls embrace her and her engagement! Its NOT about the ring!! Its about the bride and groom preparing for a new life together as a family!!!!

Re: no ring to show for

when we first got engaged, DH gave me a silver tiffany ring (no stone) that cost less than $200. i love it and still wear it every day on my right hand even though i now have a diamond ring, too. that ***** that people are focusing on the material and not on the important things!

Re: no ring to show for

I never thought a e ring was important and even though I have one, I still don't. My mother doesn't have an e ring and never wanted one.

What is important is their relationship and she should consider getting some new friends if they won't take her engagment seriously because she doesn't have a ring. That may sound rude, but that is how I feel about the whole thing. The ring isn't what is important, the relationship is.

Re: no ring to show for

What she should do if they are serious is figure out exactly what she wants, buy the band and keep a CZ stone in it. Then, when the times right- replace it!

Re: no ring to show for

I had that problem. DH proposed, I said yes, but I didn't have a ring. I still went and looked at halls, tried on dresses etc. I got the ring of my dreams when he could afford it. And he didn't spend a small fortune for it either.
