for those of you who are choosing to have a non-religious ceremony; other than the vows, what else happens during the ceremony. i feel like it's going to be ultra short because we don't plan on doing anything like lighting a candle or pouring sand...i feel like i need to kill some time before cocktail hour. any ideas?

Re: non-religious ceremony
We included a poem, think of it as a reading. We chose one by Maya Angelou called Touched by an Angel; there are many non-religious love poems that you can choose from.

we are lighting a candle in memory of those who have passed away. the candle will remain lit throughout the reception as well to symbolize their presence.

Re: non-religious ceremony
You could still do a unity candle or the sand ceremony. Contrary to what a lot of people think, they're not actually traditional parts of Christian ceremonies. Lighting the unity candle just symbolizes your union.

Re: non-religious ceremony
we did the sand ceremony---totally not religious. we had a reading of 'these are the hands...' thing. i presented a rose to his parents and he presented a rose to my mom and the officiant did a reading about the joining of 2 families. we were supposed to do a wine ceremony too, a non religious thing, but for whatever reason it was not done. our ceremony was short and sweet, about 20-30 mins long.
