has anyone or is anyone planning on having a non-smoking wedding reception--if so how are you going about this---are you asking your dj/band to announce this --any ideas are welcome!

Re: non-smoking weddings

I've never been to a wedding on LI where there was smoking, most halls don't allow this - so you won't have to announce it. If your hall does allow it, then I would suggest having the maitre'd communicate this to your guests before the start of the cocktail hour.

Re: non-smoking weddings

I would hope that people would be aware of the common courtesy to step outside if they wanted to smoke. I went to a wedding this weekend and there was no announcement or anything...people just know to go outside. I can't imagine anyone lighting up inside at a wedding reception! YUCK!

Re: non-smoking weddings

We went to a wedding 2 weeks ago, there were purposely no ashtrays on the tables and the dj made a very tasteful brief announcement that at the request of the bride and the groom and the County of Westchester, smoking was only permitted in area x and area y

Re: non-smoking weddings

If there is no ashtrays, isn't it obvious that the reception is non-smoking? Thats what we plan to do... Smokers will have to smoke outside

Re: non-smoking weddings

My reception site (in NYC) specifically asks if I want to allow smoking or not. If I allow it, the site puts out ashtrays on the bars and on the tables. If not, no ashtrays are put out and the staff will act as the heavy in case some obnoxious guest lits up anyway.

I don't think any annoucement should be made.

Re: non-smoking weddings

To my knowledge, you can't smoke indoors at any halls on LI. It's the law. So you don't have to make an announcement. If there are any issues, you could just tell your maitre d and if they see anyone smoking inside the room, they can tell them that there is no smaoking inside.

Re: non-smoking weddings

I'm thinking about asking the DJ to request that smokers smoke on the far side of the garden so that people don't have to walk through a cloud of carcinogenic smoke to enjoy the beautiful gardens! Have to run it by the FH though - 99% of the smokers are also his friends...

Re: non-smoking weddings

Lands End asked us if we wanted smoking. We allowed it outside only, so they only put ash trays on the deck.

No ashtrays tells the story, and if guests ask the bartender or any staff for an ashtray of if they can smoke, they inform the guests to smoke outside.

I wouldn't make any announcement.

Re: non-smoking weddings

As an ex-smoker I can tell you that the first thing I would do at a wedding was to look for the ashtrays to know where smoking was allowed. If there were no ashtrays, it meant to go outside. Though in recent years, even if smoking was allowed, I would still go outside so as to not disturb the non-smokers and prevent them from enjoying themselves and the wedding...and I would say 90% of smokers feel the same. No need for an annoucement.....

Makes me SO HAPPY I don't have to deal with THAT anymore!!!!!

Re: non-smoking weddings

Port Jeff CC didn't even ask if we wanted smoking or not. The NON-SMOKING was automatic, and guests who wished to lite up had to go out onto the deck.
