Not being rude....

Original post by conigs25

but I was just on BHB and there was a post about showing e-rings and I love seeing everyones rings

However, the post promted this question for you: do you think it is necessary to let other people know how big your stone is and/or are you insulted/annoyed when people in 'real life' ask you the size??? I think it is a very obnoxious question. Who gives a crap how big it is??

Sorry JMO and Im tired of people doing it to me and to my friends.

Whats the big deal about saying how big your ring is? Does it really matter? I honestly dont think people are reading through the posts saying..'my ring is bigger than this one and that one'. So whats wrong with describing it?!

I agree, why should anyone care how big your stone is- it's not a competition!

sadly, it is to some people

I agree with this thread though... it's no one's business. I posted a pic of mine on that BHB thread but no other details.

On of FH friend's wife asked me how much my ring cost. I told her I didn't know. She Replied, 'Don't you want to know how much you are worth?' I replied, 'I am worth more than my ring.' I cannot stand rude people.

the nerve of her! I would told her to her face what I thought of her idiotic comment.

with the post - ok i doubt anyone is doing that, youre right, but if in 'real' life I think it is rude to ask someone that question...What does it matter?? I had someone ask me , how big my stone is and how much did fh pay... I was taken aback and didnt want to answer, because what is it their business???

It could be 10 carats but still look like it charcoal!!!! Size doesn't matter! (The size of the stone that is LOLOL)

I think it's really rude, and I hate when people ask me! As soon as I got engaged I had people calling and asking 'what size it is'

The best is girls that aren't engaged 'I want nothing less than a 2 kar. ring!' I just laugh, i think it's sad that girls think this way. It's really not supposed to be about how big your ring is it gets me so mad

I think sometimes people loose sight of what the ring represents. It's a symbol of our FH's affection and their commitment to us. It's not about flashy jewlery. I don't know how many karats my ring is, but I don't care to be honest. It's not a status symbol, it's just a symbol that tells the world that he is committed to me

whoo hoo you go girl! I know that's right!!!

My favorite answer when someone asks how big my ring is..... 'Big enough for me!'

So far that has shut people up pretty quick.

I just opened the thread and read it, and it's not so much rude as it is a bit...obnoxious. OK, I said it. Hope I don't get crucified for saying that, and no offense to the gals who repsonded. We all see and read things differently.

Money is always a touchy subject, I think it's rude to ask someone how much they paid for anything - that includes a home, car, their hall, etc. Yes, research is one thing, but in some cases it's definitely a case of competition over research.

I don't like the posts where people put the sizes of their rings. Notice how no one ever puts anything under a carat, even though there are plenty of girls out there with smaller diamonds. A post like that makes these girls, and their FH's, feel bad.

why would it make girls with smaller diamonds feel bad? what if the girl didn't want a big diamond?? my center diamond is only .55 carrots... and i picked it out that way!! i'm only 5 feet tall, so bigger rings looked rediculus on my small hands, PLUS i work with kids so i didn't want a huge rock. i think sometimes girls with bigger diamonds look at girls with smaller diamonds and sort of feel bad for them, but why should they? what if the girl didn't want a huge ring to begin with?
plus, the way i see it, you're gonna be married forever- thats plenty of time for an upgrade

What does it matter?

What happened to the meaning behind one's e-ring? It's a symbol of his love for you and that he wants to spend the rest of his life with you...to me thats priceless regardless of the size or what the ring looks like for that matter.

I thought that question was very rude.

Amen to that!!

True and true....when it comes down to it, to me it's just a piece of jewelry that FH has given to me as a token of his commitment.

Now the wedding band....to me that's more important than the e-ring because it will be engraved and signifies the union between FH and I.

I have a 1 carat ring, and don't give a crap if someone thinks it's not big enough. I wanted it to be that size because anything bigger didn't look right on my long skinny fingers!!!

And to hell with all that 2 months salary BS!!! Some people can't afford that!!! I was just happy to get a ring, let alone care about the specifics of the ring!!

I would never ask anyone and I really don't like being asked (about my ring)!!!

If the subject comes up, I have nothing to be ashamed of but I have to wonder what is someone's motive for asking a question like that.

Same goes for house prices, but since that can easily be looked up, I will often just volunteer the info.

UGH I HATE this topic...

My FH worked is A** off being a waiter to save for a ring for me when he couldn't find a job right after college and I could care less how big or small it is.....the fact that he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me and the fact that he worked so hard to save up money to buy a ring to surprise me with means more to me than talking about how many carrots it is!!!!!!!!

It makes me so uncomfortable when people comment on the size of my ring-Yes my sweetie did good but do you have to grab my hand and carry on. A simple that is nice would be just okay.

I absolutely agree! You can have a 'rock' on your finger and be SO proud that it's a 2. something carat, but you know what, the diamond could be an absolutely crappy quality. It's not about the size... it's not about 'how big is it?' It's about the man who gave it to you and asked you to spend the rest of your life with him.

Re: Not being rude....

I'm reading this thread, and I'm thinking, wow, only one person has said anything to my face about the size of my ring - and that was a guess. (almost right on too, only .05 off) It was someone I have known for 20 years, and I didn't give it a second thought.

Prospectively though, I could see how it would be rude/tacky/impolite if someone I didn't know for that long starting asking details.

I'm sorry so many of you are putting up with that kind of offensive behavior (for those of your that find it offensive).
