but if your make-up person is getting paid $75-$150 a girl (give or take)
why do you tip? You know your covering all the costs she could ever endure for the day, and its all going into her pocket....
Just curious....

does anyone feel weird about this? like is it awkward when you use someone who owns their own business and you dont tip and you are parting ways and its like..... THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...... and nothing else? or is it normal or depends on the person?

I don't think you're being rude or cheap, it is totally at your discretion. If someone did a crappy job, showed realled late or was a total a$$, they wouldn't get a tip or get less of a tip than someone who was totally awesome, helpful and went above and beyond. I tip those people, bc I would hope it would be incentive to stay that way.... I reward good bevahior / results.

Re: not being rude or cheap...
If anyone gives me good service, I tip them. Let me tell you, I really tip anyone that is nice and does a good job. The guy who pumps my gas gets happy when he sees me pull in. It's bad because I tip too much to too many people. But I think once you have worked and had to live in tips for any reason, it makes you tip more.

I know!! I had no idea I should have tipped at my makeup trial and then I totally overtipped at my hair trial (gave her $30 for a $50 trial!)
I think the day of I will give like $30 tips, which is exactly 20% (both hair & makeup are $150).
But if you think about it, 6 people are getting their hair done, plus me so she's making $600 for like 4 hours of work, which is not too shabby!!!
I would love to take home $600 for 4 hours of work!!

I hate tipping. I teach piano and voice lessons and I am technically providing a 'service' and I don't get tipped. I even drive to their house!

Re: not being rude or cheap...
I think if they do a good job they should get a tip. You have to take into account travel costs and makeup fees. Most makeup artists buy the really good expensive makeups (I'm assuming)..not the drugstore stuff. So after all is said and done, I think a tip is nice...as long as they did good work!
The reason why makeup is so expensive is because you can't believe the amount of stuff you need to be a makeup artist. You need all the shades for different skin tones and different types for different types of skin (oily vs dry skin) All the different brushes etc. So technically its not all going into their pocket...

I honestly wonder the same thing. These people are pocketing every penny...and making good money. I'm not cheap either...but I dont think it's necessary to tip someone that is making $200 for an hrs worth of work
