My FH and I did not have an engagement party because my FMIL said that she didnt think it was a good idea. I was upset about this because I just wanted a party to celebrate our engagement, gifts where not important to me. Anyway so we decided not to have one so we didnt have to deal with her comments. Has anyone else had any FMIL issues??

Re: Not having an engagement party....
MY FMIL DID EVERYTHING SHE COULD TO RUIN OUR PARTY. I DID MY BEST NOT TO REACT TO ANY OF IT. ITS BEEN ALMOST 4 MONTHS SINCE THE PARTY AND SHE'S STILL B**TCHING.

Throw a small, intimate one with you and FH's friends only. It's the experience you seem to want, and you should have it!!

To be honest, I didn't have one. FH and I just celebrated with each of our immediate family members with champagne and that was it. We're saving the real costs for the wedding.

Re: Not having an engagement party....
Have ONE! Even if it's a small, in the house one. You may end up regretting it if you don't. My parents gave us our engagement party at Frankie and Johnnie's The Pine on a Sunday afternoon in August, and we had a BLAST! It's good prep for the wedding, and its nice to celebrate with everyone who loves you... especially since the wedding was so far away to us. You really shouldn't NOT have on just because your FMIL said no. Not for nothing, but who is she to say that? It's YOUR life. YOUR special time. YOUR engagement. Do what YOU want to do.

Re: Not having an engagement party....
I don't have ANY problems with my FMIL, but we didn't have an E-Party either. She knows we like to be by ourselves, and she packed us a dinner for 2 that she made. We then celebrated with some wine. It wasn't a big deal to us.

My FMIL didn't want us to have an e-party either. TOUGH!! WE still had one. We just wanted to celebrate the fact that we were getting married and tell our friends and family..
Do what you want.. Start now because if you let In laws have there way, they will try to control you forever!!!!

I think the answer to this would be definitely yes!! I am not one of them fortunately, but FMIL are very popular on this board!
As for an e-party, have one! Oh well if FMIL doesn't think you should, its not up to her!!!

Did your FMIL give you reasons as to why she did not want you and DH to have an engagement party????

Re: Not having an engagement party....
I personally don't have any problems with my FMIL, but If the two of you want an engagement party, you should have one. You don't want to regret not having one. I am positive many people at our engagement party did not agree with having engagemtnt parties, but we wanted one so we could celebrate with our loved ones our engagement. It is the only time in your life you can have one.

Re: Not having an engagement party....
My FMIL doesn't let me stay at her house, so the only way I can see my FH is when he comes down here once a month. But we're going to have an e-dinner with the families at some point this summer. She better behave herself.

Mine had 'her' engagement party 2 weeks before my shower - when my mother specifically asked her NOT to have it so close. At the party, there were nearly no pictures taken of DH and I, no acknowledgement of the fact that we were getting married and MIL's friends talked smack about my parents. She also told her guests not to come to my bridal shower.
I won't even go into what she did on my wedding day.
o-m-g that is terrible I'm so sorry

Re: Not having an engagement party....
My MIL is a psychopath, but for different reasons. We didn't have an engagement party because my mom didn't want us to - she said either the E-party or the Shower. It didn't bother me so much, but if you want to have your friends over for a no-gifting party, I don't see why that would be a problem.

Re: Not having an engagement party....
FH & I have been on the fence for a while about the e-party. Not b/c of FIL's but b/c of my family . It's believed that an engagment party is the kiss of dealth. At least 6 couples called off the weding right after the e-party.. In fact several of my aunts have forwarned me about the e-party curse....
I don't have any doubts that Jas & I will grow old together, but to be on the safe side.. we're having a casual engagement celebration at FIL's home. Which they offered to us.... Very casual, just close friends & family... catered bbq, style w/ frozen drinks, beer & wine, not too fancy

Re: Not having an engagement party....
FH & I did not have a big engagement party because FH did not want anything big (he did not want friends to give us presents). But I did want a party, so we compromised and just had both of our families over for a little party. We did it at my parent's house and it was not a big party at all (just immediate family). It was perfect for us!
My opinion is if you and FH want to have something, then have a party. Do not let either of your parents tell you whether or not to have one. This is your time to enjoy, not there's. They already had their time when they got engaged years ago. JMHO
