Not sure how to take this...FMIL thing

Not sure how to take this...FMIL thing

So I finally got the nerve to ask my FMIL to see her dress, making a big deal about it because FH said it was so pretty. (Mind you even if it was a potato sack, I would have told her it was GORGEOUS). I am sure it was gorgeous anyway as she is rather particular about her clothing. She is an attractive woman and I really had no doubts. I had been deciding whether or not to ask her b/c it could have gone two ways. 1) If I DID ask, I could be considered 'too nosy' and 2) If I DIDN'T ask, it would seem like I didn't give a poop. Ya know, damned if ya do and damned if ya don't. So I asked and guess what. She doesn't want to show me - she wants it to be a surprise. Now why would she show everyone else but me? Anyone else come across this? I dunno, I think its odd. If anything, you'd think the BRIDE would want to surprise people. And I already showed her a picture of my dress.

That's just annoying...your wedding day is about you, not her.

I think that's pretty weird. The day is not about her - maybe she's not aware of that fact.

I just kinda played along and said 'OK! LA LA LA LA!' What else was I supposed to do?

Wish I could explain that one for you... my FMIL couldn't wait to show me the dress she picked, just to make sure she had my approval, even though I trusted her judgment.

Maybe you could have FH describe it to you to get an idea?

i think all FMIL's are just wacky... you are taking away their baby boy... no matter how nice or fantastic they may seem, you are still taking their baby boy, and becoming the other woman in their life... so if they have a chance to stick it to you someway, they do!

what - does she think she is going to upstage you? you are the bride. no one will look as good or radiant as you and if she even tries something people usually say how sad that the MOG is doing that.

I would ask your FI to take a picture of it for you.

Yes, I am marrying their first born and only son. I think that is hard for them to swallow. I am going to be #1 now and I don't think they can handle that. But come on now, its just a dress. She saw mine and I am the friggin bride here. now I am thinking 'Guess what, ITS OUR SHOW!!!!.' Mind you, I do not get like that often. I tend to shy away from the spotlight. But now I want to make a whole friggin production!

This of course comes on the heels of his sisters wanting to go to FL to get a tan for the wedding which is set in the dead of winter in the middle of FEBRUARY. Fine, go get a tan but come on, fake and bake if ya have to. I am not having a tan because ITS FRIGGIN FEBRUARY!

They aren't bridesmaids. I just have to worry about family photos. But hey, they can get all the attention they want. People ain't handing THEM checks all night!!

Oh boy you gotta love the fmils. I don't really get why she doesn't want to show you the dress. But heaven knows my fmil does a million things I don't understand. Wish I could be more helpful!

Maybe because you are marrying her son, it's the last little bit of control she feels she has over anything related to you or him? Sounds pretty wild but my MOH's MIL is a wack-a-doo who has been doing weird stuff to my MOH for years. Never anything big but it's the small stuff that she hopes no one will notice.

Im a little weirded out by this. I told my own sister about this and she suggested that if she asks about going to a dress fitting with me to FH, that FH should tell her I was a little hurt that she didnt want to share with me. To tell you the truth, I am a little bit. I just dont get it.

ETA: I always try to do the right thing. I am always interested (or pretend to be) interested in her suggestions. I always help when I am there (ie tonight's Chanukah meal) and I always feel that I am not embraced. I told FH that I will ALWAYS show respect to his family but its hard.

oh geez
That is so obnoxious!!!!
Yes, you would think that the BRIDE's dress should be the BIG SURPRISE.
IGNORE IT....or at least try to.
