Not sure how to take this...FMIL thing

Original post by Goldi1021

So I finally got the nerve to ask my FMIL to see her dress, making a big deal about it because FH said it was so pretty. (Mind you even if it was a potato sack, I would have told her it was GORGEOUS). I am sure it was gorgeous anyway as she is rather particular about her clothing. She is an attractive woman and I really had no doubts. I had been deciding whether or not to ask her b/c it could have gone two ways. 1) If I DID ask, I could be considered 'too nosy' and 2) If I DIDN'T ask, it would seem like I didn't give a poop. Ya know, damned if ya do and damned if ya don't. So I asked and guess what. She doesn't want to show me - she wants it to be a surprise. Now why would she show everyone else but me? Anyone else come across this? I dunno, I think its odd. If anything, you'd think the BRIDE would want to surprise people. And I already showed her a picture of my dress.

I agree with the other girls, have a spy scope out the dress, if it seems normal ignore her.

Sounds petty doesnt it?

Leslie, that is a bit odd. Did FH see it? What does he say? I'm marrying a first born & ONLY child & I know its been hard for his mom to 'give up' her only son to me...she gets offended when she finds out we did stuff w/o 'consulting' her or telling her that we're going, etc.

She hasn't bought her dress yet, but she even saw my mom's dress.

I would let it go Leslie, but have FH check out the dress. What did FH say when she said this to you?

Oh I know its pretty. FH said so and I trust him. I just wanted her to know I cared and it backfired. I give up!

That is strange! I've heard of FMILs doing annoying things, but this is a new one. I don't know how I would react to that. I think your sister is right, maybe you could have your FH mention to his mother that she hurt you. I dunno...I'm not much help on this one!

I have let it go as far as shes concerned but let this be a lesson to all FMILS (and you know who you are). When your FDIL tries her hardest to do the right thing, LET her try. We are all not evil and I for one do not wish to drive a wedge between her and her son.

Couldn't agree with you more!

Leslie, that is definitely strange, but at this point I would just let it go. You let her know you cared, and were interested, and she choose to behave like a horse's arse.

My FMIL is acting just as strange. She has insisted since the beginning that she hates dresses and wanted to wear a pant suit, to which I said it was fine, the most important thing was that she was comfortable, and then at my house on x-mas she said she wanted a dress.

When I said I thought you didn't like dresses and wanted to wear pants, she said she doesn't like dresses and she did want to wear pants, but changed her mind. So, we are going shopping together to this point she has showed NO interest in wedding planning, and now she wants to shop for something that she will be uncomfortable in

For a second I thought you were going to ask to her wedding dress.

Its common for woman to want to surprise people with their clothes. Shes not trying to steal your wedidng spotlight she just wants to look really good and show it off. You'll still be the center of attention. Unless she wants to wear a huge ball gown with a blusher, you have nothing to worry about. If it was really that bad, I'm sure your family would give a heads up.

Leslie... eek, you might hate ME for this, but I actually don't want to show my FMIL my dress. not because i hate her (cause I don't) but because i want it to be a surprise for her and my FH! the only peeps who have seen my dress are my close close girls and my aunt and mom. but i really wanted to keep it guarded.

my fmil asked me to see a pic of the dress and i kind of shrugged it off. i KNOW she wanted to see it (she told my FH) but i really want to keep it a surprise... the thing is, it's a little unique and i just don't want my FH to overhear her talking about it to anyone.

anywhooo...to the point of my story. she got her dress and told my mom and not me... i heard it's green and i told her and all my aunts, etc. that i trust them, know they'll look fabulous and just want everyone to feel beauitful. i'm not too concerned if she wants to show me... if she does, that's nice. if not, it's ok.

just keep being a good daughter-in-law... i'd move on and not worry about it too much...
