Not to offend anyone, but...

Original post by HeatherLynna

... is this ridiculous or what? After watching Lindsay's beautiful preview on AJ's blog, I started viewing others because I love his work. I clicked on this Sweet 16 video that just so happened to take place in the same room that my reception will be at Jericho Terrace.

It was a beautiful party, butttttttttt REALLY?!?!?! It looks like a wedding!!! From her white gown, to the tiara, and the way she enters the room with her boyfriend.. I just can't.

CRAZY!!!! She had EVERYTHING that you would need at a wedding and MORE!!!! Jericho Terrace always does the champagne march at weddings after the bride and groom first come in. They did it here!!!!!! They are freakin 16 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am I the only one who is horrified at the fact that she had a videographer? Not just a photographer, a video too! I can't believe she had a white gown, satin gloves, limos, dance with her father, etc. Who wouldn't want to save all that for their wedding?

I think what gets me is the fact that it is just like a wedding, not so much how extravagant it was or how much money they spent. I used to work in a club/lounge that was rented out all the time for SUPER sweet 16's and they were awesome LOL. Some had caged animals, dancers, etc.. but they didn't mimic a wedding in the least.

It is sad what they turned into..SS's used to be an innocent rite of passage, now they are a way to show off and out do each other.. the parents are pretty much forced to keep up with the joneses! I blame MTV. :p

ALSO- I can't help but think about the mega B*tch at TWOTY who was flipping out when she got there!!!
We were waiting for our cars when her SS was about to begin. Anyone else remember that?

Such brats!!

Crashing!

I don't think its that over the top. I think the videographer and the extra uplighting is a bit much and yes the wedding gown. But I had a sweet 16 that was like a wedding. I thought that they have always been like that.

My mom planned the whole thing and I never been to a sweet 16 other then my own and it was like a wedding. I wore a white dress custom made. It wasn't anything super fancy at all. I was looking at a sweet 16 dress magazine and just combined two styles of a white dress.

I also had my 8 guys and girls. Picked out what dress they were wearing. My mom made us do an entrance where everyone was introduced and then we had to do dances together. I also had a father daughter dance with my grandfather and a toast. I thought this was all common and my album looks like a wedding album just the teen version.

The whole thing wasn't alot of money either since we didn't have limos or video. I had invites and thankyou cards. It was held in a small catering hall that had a buffet and we got a nice sheet cake.

Wish I had a cardbox for all the cards I got.

I don't think I grew up to be a brat at all. I'm still jealous of the girl though.

They definitely haven't always been so over the top. I have been to many sweet sixteens and while they were very nice, they never had a wedding feel. None of my friends EVER picked out what people at their party would wear! Just like weddings aren't what they used to be.

I do not believe that just because you have a crazy extravagant sweet sixteen you are a 'brat,' but more often than not the girls who do are spoiled princesses. It really is just an opinion, but obviously a popular one.

I totally agree with you.. You have to know what a sweet sixteen is all about. There's the church ceremony. You're suppose to pick 8 guy and 8 girls to sum up to 16. The father is the person who puts on the heels on his daughter as a sign that she's growing up. Then comes the father-daughter dance. Then there's the candle lighting ceremony. There's 16 candles and the birthday girl is suppose to dedicate each candle to a person whether they're are alive or not.
It's a beautiful ceremony, the only bad thing that people have just gone over the top. But that's not just on birthday parties, it's on everything. People just like to have the best and be the best.

awwwwww
whats wrong with the videographer?? i had a video guy.. lol
he was so cool too, he printed pics at the location and gave them out as favors. this was 13 years ago. I LOVEEEEEE watching my video makes me laugh every time.
I begged my parents for my sweet 16 and they said no no no no..

so that night i thought i was sneaking into a club with my older cousin and they told me hey lets go to this place to meet up with a girl who is going to lend you her id.. lol i walk in and whammmmm surprise. my parents had a partner for me, and they they had my aunt make me the sweet dress (it was red), watching my reaction on that video was priceless....

as sujeire said, in latin america this is a BIGGGGGGGGG deal!!! all the sweet 16's i went to growing up all involved a church, DJ, photo's, dresses, catered halls..

i think we should post our sweet 16 pics... Then and NOW.. lol

oh yeah, all my little cousins parties in Dominican Republic all resemble weddings, here not so much, but the ones there are wayyyyy over the top, but i guess it snormal for me

I want to see some pics...lol
You right. This doesn't surprise us because we're used to the big parties. This is normal in DR..no wonder why we have no money..it's because we spend it all in parties.
For my 1yrs, I did a candyland theme and spent over $7000. now that I think it's stupid because she was 1, what the hell was she going to remember but I did it anyway and all the kids till this day say it was the best party ever.

I even had my daughter do a photo shoot..
Yes, I am that crazy mother.

Re: Not to offend anyone, but...

ok so i just watched the video again, and i have to say the girls all looked like they were havin a great time. And the second video i watched (the catherine one) she looked beautiful and at first i was like this is nuts, but then i saw her with her grandfather and he looked so amazingly happy.

think about how many of us always wished we had our grandparents here with us at our wedding day, think about it, at least he got to see her all dressed up, center of attention in a beautiful dress...

guess when it comes down to it, its not that bad of an idea

(although i STILLLL think all these over the top parties are too much)

im jewish and i had a choice of a bat mitzvah and a sweet 16 party and i ended up going with a sweet 16. my parents had it at a hall it wasnt extravagant like that with lighting and etc but it was fun everyone danced. I had CPs etc. my mom picked the stuff and i know they loved doing it. but i doubt people coming to my wedding now even remember it.

Of course they are having a great time!!! Look at the party!!!!! Would her grandfather have had a great time if she wasn't wearing a white dress and her family didn't spend tonssssssss of money? Yah I'm sure her grandfather would have still enjoyed himself.

That sounds like a normal sweet 16. My sister had one too. My issue is that this girl's sweet 16 had every characteristic of a wedding. That is what made me post it.
