Not to offend anyone, but...

Original post by HeatherLynna

... is this ridiculous or what? After watching Lindsay's beautiful preview on AJ's blog, I started viewing others because I love his work. I clicked on this Sweet 16 video that just so happened to take place in the same room that my reception will be at Jericho Terrace.

It was a beautiful party, butttttttttt REALLY?!?!?! It looks like a wedding!!! From her white gown, to the tiara, and the way she enters the room with her boyfriend.. I just can't.

WOW

One word comes to mind:
SPOILED

And I don't know their whole story so it is wrong to judge based on a video clip of a party. BUT, that's what i think of when seeing that.

It really is like a wedding. What happens if for some reason when her wedding DOES come around, they can't afford these kinds of things anymore? She'll be in for some real disappointment then. Kids are losing their innocence at such a young age, it's scary.

If I have a daughter, I'd love to give her the sweet 16 of her dreams, but if her dream looks like this - she better start working real hard bc there's NO WAY I'm throwing away college money for a 'Mock Wedding' oh wait a sweet 16.

i didn't even have a sweet 16 party.
i opted for the expensive piece of jewlery my paretns offered instead. Ironically, i will be wearing that ring as part of my something blue on my wedding day (and also something old)

Awwwwwwwwww that is so freakin nice!

ITA!!!!! I understand that everyone is different and some can do what others can't because of money. However, this reminds me of that TV show that I used to watch while vomiting. Spoiled princesses that have no sense of reality. It is just disgusting in my opinion. I am alllllllllllll about fabulous parties, but a Sweet 16 is not a WEDDING and shouldn't look like one. Just my opinion.

I do know that Sweet 16's are crazy now, but it still just blows my mind. I was never big into them so maybe that is part of the reason. However, I didn't even want my engagement party to feel like a wedding. I certainly wouldn't want my Sweet 16 to!

Either way, the party did loook BEAUTIFULLLL and I love any chance I get to see my room in action.

Lol i know i always look and see if i can find pictures of someones party at my hall!

Whattttttttttt??!!! A church ceremony?!!? I have NEVER heard of that for a sweet 16!!!

...anddddd ohhhhhhhh nononono... a wedding and a sweet 16 are NOT the same thing, but that just goes to show how materialistic people become. A wedding is a celebration of a MARRIAGE. People lose sight of the important things. Ugh.....

Its crazy!!! Girls see that My Super Sweet 16 show on MTV and think that they have to have that. Its too much! I think it puts way too high of a standard on anything else going forward. That money could have been spent on something much more productive.

In Latin countries is customary to have the blessing of the Priest. Typically you go to church and the Priest will do a small ceremony in your honor. You have to understand that this is a huge deal in Latin countries. Back in the days they would do the ceremony at church and the party would be held in their barrio (neighborhood). They would decorate the entire neighborhood. The girl would still wear her big gown and they would party till the next day.
Like everything else people have lost the value of things and now they just skip the important things and care about having the biggest party ever. Also understand that the cost of a wedding compare to a sweet sixteen is totally different. A wedding at any venue will be higher than that of a birthday party. It's almost half of the price. At least that was my experience. Lots of girls dream about this day as they dream about their wedding. My daughter has been going to one almost every other weekend. Some are small and small are big. It all depends on what parents can afford.
I agree with what you are all saying. It is a lot of money and some of these girls don't deserve it. But in all fairness you do have some that do and if their parents can provide, then I'm all for it.
This is something as a mother have been dreaming about. Unfortunately, not everything happens as you plan. She's still having a party but a small one. Plus she gets to invite 2 of her friends to Mexico to join in for the family vacation.

I do know that quinceaneras are a big deal as I did go to a few of my friends when we were in high school. However, none of them were this much like a wedding. I think that is my biggest problem with it. I get the big party thing. I am all about extravagance. However, I just don't think a birthday party should be comparable to a wedding, but that is just my opinion!

I hope your daughter has a great birthday, whether it be big or small!

I have heard of some people doing the church ceremony, but this is not a custom in my family, and this girl is not holy at all. I just feel like she decided to do it just to compete w my wedding.

ITA!! It shouldn't be compare to a wedding. But some people have so much money that it doesn't hurt them to go on overdrive.

Like I said, people have lost the true value of things and it all comes down to My party is going to be the best and most extravagant party. It's sad. I think we also tend to do this with our own wedding. We want the best, we want to add more to the wedding and spend thousand and thousand of dollars on it. But what is the most important part of the wedding?? It's the ceremony and yet it's the least expensive part. That's just the way society is.

I didn't have a Sweet 16 - I wanted one on a boat and my parents literally laughed in my face!

They found them to be totally pointless - and I kind of agree! At the time, I wanted one b/c everyone else has one.

It really should just be about family and friends - just like any other birthday.

There comes a time when as a parent, I would think, you say 'ok, that's enough.'

It's not about the party - it's about who is there with you and what the day is about.

Keep the white dresses for communions and weddings - that's what they are for. Stop trying to take specials things away from one and put it towards another.

Like many of you said - people have just lost all concept of when to stop.

ITA!!!!!! I guess because I never wanted a sweet 16, I am even more apt to think this type of party is ludicrous. I have ALWAYS wanted a big wedding, and I am so happy that no other party that I have had in my life will ever compare to it.

hmm i think my sweet 16 was at home! I had a dinner with some friends but nothing huge!! FH's cousin had a giant sweet 16 party! Like a professional catering hall in LI, an amazing overpriced cake,a video montage of her and her friends (a bit ridiculous I thought). Her dad even hired Donnie from 'Making the Band' (do you guys remember him?) to make an appearance!! We were like, this is definitely too much! I dont have that type of cash and I dont think my kid will be getting that kind of sweet 16!
