Not to offend anyone, but...

Original post by HeatherLynna

... is this ridiculous or what? After watching Lindsay's beautiful preview on AJ's blog, I started viewing others because I love his work. I clicked on this Sweet 16 video that just so happened to take place in the same room that my reception will be at Jericho Terrace.

It was a beautiful party, butttttttttt REALLY?!?!?! It looks like a wedding!!! From her white gown, to the tiara, and the way she enters the room with her boyfriend.. I just can't.

My friend had a sweet sixteen last year in Jericho Terrace in the room. Matter of fact she was the first person to launch this room. Her parents spend a fortune on her party. It was pretty insane

Yeah it is crazy! What do you mean 'launch' this room? After they re-did it?

Yep.

it gotten to be absolute insanity!! i was picking up my invitations last night and this couple was there paying the bill for invites and favors for their kids communion and their bill was atelast 2 grand!! i mean its their money they can do with it what they want but i just think its ridiculous how much people spend on these parties. a wedding i can see being a little more extravagant than usual but for birthday or communion please people get a grip!!

oh and to chime in on sweet 16s mine was considered 'over the top' for the time and it was at a catering hall that was still under 50 a plate for a saturday in july. the best sweet 16 i remember was this girl who had like 10 of us ride in a limo from LI to the city where we met her family at a japanese restauant/karoke bar it was awesome, a limo ride, sushi and karoke? i would wanna do that for a bacherlorette party!

yea big over the top parties are nice but i feel like alot of kids would be just as happy with something way smaller, as long as they can dance with their friends thats all they need

My sweet 16 was at a Knights of Columbus.

Mine was at Verdi's of Westbury and my parents totally splurged but it was NOTHING like that. I definitely had balloon CPs and made my own favors. And we bought my invitations out of a book at the Hallmark store.

I remember they spent like $900 on a DJ and that was really pushing it.

Mine was buffet style with a candy table at the end and pass around hors deorves.

W*T*F is up with the white dress and pretending it's a wedding? i just don't get it

Holy crap.

It is crazy isn't it?? In HS I went to Sweet 16's at JT, Sandcastle, Milleridge Inn, Leonards and Floral Terrace!! They were all like weddings!!

Mine was at a restaurant which has now closed down but I still loved it LOL and it def. wasn't a mini wedding!

You're just jealous!

You know, as much as I would love to have more money than I would know what to do with... I still wouldn't want a 'wedding' for a Sweet 16. I think these people just are out of conttrollllllllllll.

totally agree with you!!! Kids nowadays (omg i sound so old!) are brats and they have no idea with its like to work to make their own money....

I used to plan events and i would have a harder time negotiation with brides andgrooms then with the sweet sixteen/barmitzvah crew.. they would ALWAYS buy the biggest package, its insane, and its all because the parents want to show off....

IM GLAD I MET A MAN IN UNIFORM!

Don't hate me but I don't thinks its insane. I wanted the same for my daughter. She's turning 16 in July and I have been planning for years but because of some issues with her father, (he's not around) she decided she wanted something smaller. I was upset about this but hey it's her birthday so she gets what ever she wants.
The only thing that would have been different was her dress..she wanted a light pink gown.

Honestly, you have to have kids to understand why parents sometimes do these things. If you have a child who gets awesome grades, does everything by the book, you will treat her to what you can.
Her parents most likely have the money to go all out.

i would do it in a hear-beat. But hey that's just me. Hopefully my 2 little ones will stick to the idea of wanting one.

Totally don't hate you for wanting to do whatever you can for your kids. I expected people to disagree about this being ridiculous. However, a child would appreciate any party. I see no reason to spoil them with an out of control party like this because they do what they should. Believe me, I'm sure I will spoil and love the crap out of my children, but not to this point. They would never know reality.

i didn't even have a sweet 16 party.
i opted for the expensive piece of jewlery my paretns offered instead. Ironically, i will be wearing that ring as part of my something blue on my wedding day (and also something old)
