I am really hoping to have my reception in anyplace but a typical 'ballroom'. Something like a loft or mansion. I saw a few things about the Bourne Mansion, but not much....does anyone know anything more about it?
Has anyone gotten quotes from any of the vineyards out east. So far they all seem very expensive, 10,000 site fee and then a pp catering fee on top of that!
I have also looked at a couple of lofts in NYC but also very expenisive.
Any thoughts on the brooklyn botanical gardens?
I will be thankful for any help you guys can give me!

i'm not sure about expensive venues out east. 10K site fee is crazy! check out this site: www.weddingsitesandservices.com
they have lots of locations on there, you might be able to find something different

I don't think Vineyard Caterers charges a site fee because they are set up for catering..its on the North Fork in Aquebogue...but not too far out...i live near it...it's a pretty location...no idea on their pricing...but here's their website!
Congrats and welcome. you should look at the Royalton at the Roslyn Country Club. There is no site fee. It is like a house and you have it all to yourself. I was like you and didn't want the typical and I picked the Royalton. You can FM me if you have any questions.

I am looking to do the same type of wedding as you are. However I am looking at the summer time. Not all vineyards charge high site fees. Some are fairly reasonable (5,000). To me that isn't that much depending on how many people you are having. I am having about 200 so my fees on other things are pretty high. I am going out east this weekend to look around and to get some more info. I can let you know more over the weekend.

i was looking for something different myself. i dunno how different you want but my reception is at the metropolitan. it's not your typical 'ballroom'. there's a few pics in my album if you wanna get an idea of how it looks. you can find the website under catering halls on here. look into it, it's really nice. but the pictures won't do it justice. you have to go there and see it for yourself. the ceilings are high, the floors are mahogony, there's long drapes and a balcony looking over the reception.

We chose the metropolitan also! We also wanted something a little different, and we both love that it's got a lounge type of feel to it. I know when my brother and SIL were looking at spaces, they loved Raphael (might be spelling that wrong) Vineyards out east, but for the date, had a pretty large site fee. I've heard good things about Vineyard caterers though and Bourne mansion. Glen Cove Mansion is supposed to be really nice also.

First of all.. I LOVE that idea of a NYC loft! A friend of a friend got married in a Museum in NYC! It was gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure how you feel about hotel weddings. But I am having my reception in the Hyatt Terrace Ballroom and it is anything but a typical ballroom. There is an entire wall that looks out onto a golf course that is all windows. It has many columns in the room and a very high ceiling. I was against the typical ballroom too and I too wanted something city like. This hotel is def NYC. Check into it on their website they have a virtual tour of the room but it doesnt do it justice...

Congrats and welcome!!! Have you tried the Vanderbilt Mansion? It's a Lessing location, but it's outside and tented, the grounds are really beautiful (my mom volunteers with the gardening so I'm biased) The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is georgous too! Unfrotunetly past that I'm not a lot of help

Hey! Welcome! Yea FH and I wanted something very loftish city vibe to our wedding..Unfortunately for us that idea quickly faded when we saw the prices for what we wanted.. I wanted the Pier 61 Lighthouse in the city.. beautiful!! The Puck Building is nice too.. The Bourne Mansion people I wouldn't even give them the time of day. Not when an anxious bride calls and it takes literally over 2 weeks for someone just to call me back. Plus their site fee is ridiculous. I'd rather get married at Oheka.
We ended up choosing the Westbury Manor.. and honestly it wasn't what I wanted at first but I couldn't be happier with the choice. The food is amazzzing, and the grounds you can't beat
Good Luck in planning!!!! If you can be flexible with you date a little, it makes a big difference in prices!

The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is beautiful, but expensive too. I believe they have a site fee then the catering, etc. You also have to get your own security if I remember correctly, but call to be sure. Good Luck

I originally looked at a few of the mansion type places when I was on the RH hunt.
We looked at deSeversky, Woodlands and the Bourne Mansion.
Bourne has a site fee, but they still worked out to be less $$ than the other two places because their price pp was less.
They were all pretty, but in the end we decided that wasn't what we wanted.

If u like mansions- try Glen Cove Mansion- its absolutely beautiful and the ballroom is NOT a typical ballroom, it is oddly shaped and very unique. No site fee but you're probably looking at about $160-190 per person.
Also try The Woodlands It is also a mansion, on a golf course. Is not HUGE, is actually a bit small but VERY intimate. That is MY hall!

Thank you everyone for you responses! It was very helpfull.
I looked at the sites for the metropolitan and the hyatt wind watch. I think I really like them both. I may try to go see them this weekend if I can get an appt.
Hyatt is definitly promising because we have alot of people coming in from out of town and it would be very convienent and stress free!

theres a loft in Long Island City, Queens that has a view of the city. I'm not sure of the name, but I know it holds weddings.

If you go to Barnes and Noble they have an annual magazine called LOCATIONS. It offers both traditional and nontraditional venues in NY/NJ/LI and Westchester. HTH

consider the brooklyn tobacco company in Brooklyn. It is a run down ex-warehouse in DUMBO brooklyn (under the brookln bridge).
I'm not sure what the site fee it, but I know they rent it for weddings. You'd have to bring in a tent and caterer, but the view is to die for, lots of crumbling brick walls surrounding you.
It has to be for 'a not the run of the mill bride', but if thats you I think this is such a unique venue.
