My first language is Spanish, even though i was born and raised in NYC, but my parents always spoke to me in Spanish ( I also plan on speaking Spanish to my children, my FH will speak to them in English).
Recently my FH and I got Rosetta Stone Italian, its 3 CD's and we are almost done with Cd1. I think it has been really easy for us to learn since it it similar to spanish in some ways. However yesterday at the showcase the the italian guy was singing i realized i must have not learn much becuase i hardly understood ANYTHING....
can i ask, i always wondered about the rosetta stone and i toyed with getting the cd as well.
how much was it?
thanks!

Re: NWR= 1st Language....
When I was younger, I spoke fluent Polish bc my grandmother taught me (that's how we would have our secret conversations!)
Now I can only really hold a basic conversation. Haven't spoke it in years.
Took french for 6 years in school, and again, can hold a basic conservation. I am thinking of re-learning French again. Such a pretty language

Re: NWR= 1st Language....
My first language was Polish when I was little, but as I got older I used English more and more, and the Polish got a little rusty. I still speak somewhat well though, at least well enough to pass a bilingual certification test lol.

My first language is English. I can understand Spanish and get by with my replies, but I'm not fluent. Great job learning English though!

My first language is English, but I took 8 years of Latin in school, so I can actually speak it fairly well still. Good thing I can speak a dead language Although it did help me kick major arse on my SATs!

my first language was Chinese - mandarin to be exact... my parents figured it was best to teach me Chinese first, since i would be spending the rest of my life learning english
My parents also taught me Mandarin first for the same reason, although I was born and raised in the US. I'm very thankful they did!!
I learned English in school, took ESL until 3rd grade, and soon after started speaking English better than Chinese.
My third language is French. I started taking it in 4th grade, and took it through college.

ITA - I know exactly what you mean...my father was Sicilian and my mother was Barese. My father would speak the sicilian dialect all the time to my grandmother, but thank god he woud speak the real Italian to me when I was learning in school. Once he passed away I forgot most of it because even though my mother understood Italian perfectly she would only speak English.

Re: NWR= 1st Language....
I was taught English and Croatian simultaneously, so I can speak Croatian pretty fluently. I can get by in Italian, but I'm better reading it. Just lost the ability for conversation after getting no practice.
