Just up to Orange County or Ulster County. Not too far from the city, but enough where the prices of houses drops dramatically. We were looking at newly build houses up there with 4 br and 2-3 Ba and they are about 320,000
No way! Orange county is quite expensive! A lot of rich people who have apartments in Manhattan live up there. Brand new 4-BR houses in Monroe (near Woodbury Commons) start at almost a million!!
They have great schools there - really worth looking into -- but expect high prices

I just wanted to let you know that I felt the SAME way when I started working after college!! I always thought it would be wonderful to start working, and stop going to school, but I panicked when I got a job, and realized it is not what I thought!!
I think it is normal!! I still feel like that at times...but I definitely went though a depression for a while after college!!
Hopefully it will pass!

Oh wow that sounds amazing! FH was talking about Orange County but I have never been there. I will definitely have to check it out Is it civilized over there? We were looking at NC last year to move after I finished school but we went there and it was too much of a culture shock for us so we decided to stay in NY.
Its pretty much like the suburbs. I don't live on LI but i think its not MUCH different than the island. Have you ever been to Woodbury Common OUtlets? Thats in Orange County.
FH has family that lives right by woodbury common outlets...We went a few weeks ago and it was like 15 mins from there
How is it there Denise? I know youre a city girl so try to be nice
honestly i dont really know, we went a few weeks ago bc it was a surprise party for his aunt and we went to a restaurant for the party and then left so cant really say much about it, sorry. I know FH asked his cousin what there was to do around there and he said theres a few bars everyone goes to.

Ahhhh..... that stinks, I know what you mean.
I didn't read the whole thread, so, you may have answered these questions already.....
Did you take another bar w/ NY?
(I know FH took PA and NJ, he was required to by his firm....)
And, if you did...... definitely consider the other state you took it in.
FH hates his firm, and is in the process of leaving, and because he hasn't bothered to really keep up w/ NJ, he can only really search in PA.
What I am saying is, if you're unhappy, and want a change, do so soon, before you get stuck in a rut of only practicing the exact law you do at your firm, and 'forget' (bad word choice) the rest, KWIM?
And, another thing....... I KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY YOU CAN MAKE!!! Keep it up..... before you know it, you'll be making serious $$..... esp. once you hit partner somewhere, and then it's smooth sailing..... and a lot less hours!
Do you have billable hour requirements at your firm?
I'm all over the place here, aren't I?

Re: NWR: Rant about LIfe
FH and I dont think about moving, but again we really can't. FH has been at his job for years and it wouldn't be smart for him to leave. They love him there and they promoted him to a position that nobody in the company ever got before the age of 30 and FH got it at 27, he just started this month this new position and they ALREADY have talked about even giving him the position above this one soon. They're basically prepping him to be one of the executives there and FH knows this and its been said. So wouldn't be smart for him to leave this job...They have headquarters all over the country, and fh talks about moving to miami or vegas bc he can work there for the same company but i tell him it would be different, these are the guys who he has worked with for years and already proved himself to them and they all already have a plan for him so why mess it up.
we're gonna like in kew gardens, forest hills even beginning of LI such as douglaston, little neck, maybe even massapequa

I totally understand!!!!! I teach full time and I also have a part time job. There are times that I work everyday and I don't have a day off for 2 weeks! I am tired all the time and it really stinks but I need to save $ so we can buy a house. I have been working 2 jobs for the past 7 yrs! I think I may have to quit my second job (I'm a ba for Estee Lauder in Macy's) when it gets closer to the wedding because it will just be impossible to get everything done working both jobs. I am soooo looking forward to xmas break from my full-time job!

Yeah there is the usual bars on the waterfront that are only open during season times. The other bars are ok. Kim, Jon (FH) is from Orange County. He lives 15 minutes from the Commons. I went to school in Newburgh and it is (in my opinion) very different up there. That is just my opinion though. I was thinking of moving up there but it is too different for me. Everything was like 20-30 minutes away or more. I am too used to Long Island and I don't think I can leave it..haha All there is to do is drink up there...haha I love to go visit but I can't live up there.

Yea I took NY & NJ- I wasn't required to but I figured since I was already taking it I might as well. The thing is I know everyone thinks lawyers make SO much money but it really depends on what type of law you do and it doesn't happen right out of law school. For now I just have large loan payments! I love family law but unfortunately it doesn't pay as much as corporate firms but I have no desire to do that. I feel really fortunate to be in the area of law I want to practice in the future because it will give me great experience.
As far as I know there are no billable hour requirements- it is a smaller firm so I doubt it.

It definitely doesn't hurt to look into NJ.
Another thing, you become VERY desirable around the 2 year mark...... that's prime time for switching firms.
Just make sure you keep up w/ the NJ bar assoc. I know FH let it lapse.
I think you have to take classes once in a while and stuff.
FH has been working with a few headhunters..... they seem to be really good. He might be going into personal injury, which he would love, but it means a 30k pay cut to his base salary. Which is scary when we're 5 mos. from the wedding and trying to start saving to buy a house!
ETA: No billable hour requirements are a MAJOR bonus.

Oh, yeah, that's difficult.
And, I know on top of it (at least, this was the case for FH) in the beginning, it's so boring. You get stuck w/ a lot of paperwork and stuff. He just recently started going to court, he's taking his first depo today.... etc.
That might not be the case in your firm, but, I know it was tough for FH for a while.

Yup! I hear you! We work so much for a decent life, but when do we get to enjoy it!!!???
Exactly! I was talking to FH about this and I said we are busting our buts working full time all just to NOT even be able to make ends meet. It would be different if I was living in luxury! I think I have to get out of LI
Exactly why I've decided to change careers and become a teacher! It's something I've always wanted to do and I've had it with the coporate world.

Yeap life is tough here, everyone is always in a hurry, its all about work work work. The days passes by so quickly. I enjoy what I do or else I would be going crazy. But thats life, you have to work , you have to do this and that.
