I had recommendations from 2 professors because I applied right out of college. You might want to try an employer and a professor if you have been working for a while. I have no idea who reads them or how seriously they are taken, or whether they can sway a decision, but I would approach individual professors you clicked with first and talk to them. If you are working, not sure if your employer knows you are looking to leave and go to law school.

Ditto, I went straight into law school so I got my recommendations from my undergrad. I also got recommendations from employers. I also I have no idea how seriously the rec's are taken. I think its mainly based on LSAT scores and gpa's. HTH!

I ended up in Syracuse b/c it offered the best financial package. If you want the other schools I applied to/got accepted into, FM me.

Duke Law

I got 2 recommendations from 2 of my college professors and 1 from my graduate school professor.

if you're just out of college, it's fine to get recs from your professors. if you've been working for 3+ years, i think it's recommended that you get a rec from someone you've worked with.

FM me if you want more advice~

I went to St John's Law (thank god for all the scholarships they give or I would be eloping).

I think the leading favor in getting in (and getting a scholarship) at any scool is your LSAT score and your GPA. I still believe the LSAT score is the leading favor, unless, of course ,you have an interesting background (served in the navy/army, political experience, international work, etc.)

I do believe reccomendations can be meaningful if they are from a well know professor or employer - based on your personal work (i.e., research work in undergard, particular work experience and successes). Generic letters will not do much for you. Please FM me if you want any details. I applied to 10 law schools and picked based on what I would have to pay and what debt I would have to incur to go there. I would not reccommend this approach for everyone but it worked wonders for me.

I was very happy at St. John's and studied very hard there (good gpa, law review, etc.). I now work for a big corporate NYC lawfirm - A job I got thanks to on campus recruiting. You can do well no matter where you go to school. The best choice depends on the career path you want to take.

What schools are you looking at?

FH went to Duke Law too!

I went to Penn. I'd say letters of recomendation are important, but probably more so if you've been out of school for a while. They are certainly something that get factored in, but probably also more so if you're on the GPA/LSAT margins for the reject/consider further and consider further/accept groups (most schools divide candidates into three pools on a first pass...accept, consider further and reject).

I had some professors write mine, I took some time off between undergraduate and Law School, but took accounting courses and had those professors write them for me.

I go to New York Law School, and I think your GPA and LSAT are more important than the recommendation letters, but they may help if hte admissions board is looking between two different applicants with similar qualifications.

I was temping as a legal secretary for my current boss during a trial when I was applying to shcools and he had no problem writing a recommendation for me.

(I was in 'career change' mode at the time so it had been quite a few years since I graduated college)
