Re: NWR anyone ever have a herniated disk?

I have 3

its painful.. I think the pain depends on where you have it. I have all 3 in my neck and upper back so there are days I can barely feel my arm or I have severe pain that feels like a heartattack. I actually went to the doc originally for chest and arm pains and they figured out it was my back.

I went to physical therapy for a while and that did close to nothing. I have muscle relaxer I dont take cause they dont really work...and they wanted to do surgery and i said NO WAY.. so somedays i hurt, some days I cant feel it.. and I just take it day by day.

I am goign to go to a new doc for it after the wedding, dont feel like dealing with it right now.

Re: NWR anyone ever have a herniated disk?

FH had 3 severe herniated disks in his back from a hammack accident.
One was sooo bad and pressing up against his spine and nerves in his back.. his leg started to go numb and he has severely painful shooting pains going up and down his back and leg. He could barely walk anymore and was out on disability for a long time. They tried everything.. shots... I think they are called epidurals (which makes me think of a woman having a baby!)? He had EVERY type of medication you can think of... all sorts of pain killers and muscle relaxers... he was getting those HUGE viles filled with them... then he got these red pills that were freaky because they tricked your brain into not feeling pain... so pretty much (as it was explained by the dr) if you put your hand on a burning stove you will not feel the brain because it inhibits your brian from being able to alert you to the pain - something to that effect) those were the scary pills.... that was towards the end though when it got REALLY bad and he really couldn't even walk anymore. Then about 10 months after the accident he eventually had to have surgery in his back. They put some sort of 'cushioning' up against the disk so it wasn't pressing against his spine in that manner anymoe. And I think they even cut the disk or cut something??

He was also then informed that he has degenerative disk disorder.

Then he got in a car accident and ended up with 2 Bulging Disks in his neck.

It's a viscious never ending cycle with him and his disks!!!

So far though.. he's ok! I hope it stays that way too!!

I think unless you get surgery for it you can try going to a chiropractor (FH did that as well for it - but that didn't help him much) or get meds. I'm not sure if that's something that can correct itself.

I hope you feel better though.

Also, there are a lot of organs by your back that can cause pains so you should probably go to a dr to make sure that's what it is. MOH was having back problems and turns out she needed her gall bladder removed. I had some back problems... and I ended up having a kidney infection.

Re: NWR anyone ever have a herniated disk?

My ex boyfriend had a herniated disc in his lower back...it pressed up against his ciatic nerve and gave him such bad ciatica that we couldn't go anywhere, he'd have to sit down after 5 min of walking.

He did have to go in for surgery, but it wasn't an emergency...he scheduled it at his leisure. He only stayed one night in the hospital and was actually up and walking the same day of the surgery. I'd say the recovery time was around 2 weeks. If you are still functioning you should be able to put it off until after the wedding.

ETA: I'm not sure if all disc surgery is this way, but basically what they did for my ex was they went in through a small incision and basically just scraped out the bulging part of the disc so it wasn't pressing against his nerve anymore.

Honestly if you wait it out and it gets worse... you might end up running in to go to the dr for it and you don't want it to be like weeks before your wedding or on your HM.

Your best bet is to get it taken care of now... better sooner than later... better now then in 4 months!!!!

Oh and just so you guys know... FH had the surgery and they said it wasn't going to be 100% and the odds were actually kinda low... well he is doing GREAT!! He was able to take and pass the physical for the Sanitation Dept and he works physical jobs everyday and he is completely fine!! He even picked me up the other day!!!! I get scared of that... I don't want to be the fat whale who breaks his back a second time. And he keeps telling me he is going to carry me on our wedding night!! to which I just laugh and say NO WAY!!!

The healing time for the surgery wasn't that bad either. He was able to walk right after but instructed not to for a little while. He said almost immediately he felt sooooooooooo much better. And within a month his walking (you should have seen him try to walk right before the surgery) had improved tremendously.

For anyone in this sort of pain or going through this.. I know it's scary to have surgery (I cry like a baby when I have to have teeth pulled) but the outcome is sooo worth it. Just to not be in that sort of pain anymore.. and to not have 'good days' and 'bad days'. We are too young for that!!!!!!!!

FH did the physical therapy too and it didn't work. Nothing worked and they tried so many things. The surgery was the only thing that worked. But he let it also get to a point where he had NO CHOICE but to have the surgery!

you might not even need surgery. Just go to a dr. And the ball that moves in your back... that's not so good hun!! it might not even be a herniated disk!!!

Of course I'm the preacer on 'go to a dr' yet I NEVER go to a dr!!! My eyes are a mess and I still haven't gone to a dr!!!!

Seriously, I echo everyone else in saying go get it taken care of now instead of later! I hope you feel better soon ... $ucks that you are in pain!

I'm so sorry you are going thru such bad pain but most definitely go to the doctor and have it checked out. Get it fixed now that you still have time.

How do you know if you have one? I definitely have had tweaky back moments lately.

It sounds like you have sciatica. I have herniated disks in my neck and back from a car accident. When I have a sciatica flair up the pain generates from the area right above my butt and generates down the back of my leg. Sometimes I have tingling in my foot too. I generally have it on my right side but it can happen on my left too. Weather can aggrivate it. You should see a chiropractor ASAP. Cold is better than heat, 15 min on 20 off. If you need a rec. I have one (my next door neigbor is mine and he is located in Floral Park, he is amazing!!) FM me if you want the info. I know how bad it hurts so I feel your pain, take it easy and relax

That definitely sounds like what I have. It happens at the WEIRDEST moments, too, like while I'm standing up, conducting one of my orchestras. . .after 25 minutes. I was WALKING ON STAGE at a rehearsal a couple of weeks ago and I almost fell flat on my back in front of 85 kids. That's what happens when I get my 'shooting pains.' They feel like they start at the base of the spine, then radiate through my butt into one of my legs. In fact, I'm forcing myself to lie down as I type this right now because I felt a weird flareup coming on. These pains seem to become more frequent during stressful periods (hello, 6 weeks before wedding, beginners concerts this week and next, end of the school year? stressful much?). I really need to see a doctor, as I did have to wear a back brace at night in middle school/beginning of HS for scoliosis and a rounded shoulder issue and I wonder if those things are all connected to what's going on now.

Believe it or not, this tends to happen more when I'm wearing FLAT sandals or Uggs, not heels! (They're saying that Uggs are terrible for your back, so who knows. . .)

P.S. AllisonBrian, I grew up in FP!!!

It will strike sometimes at the wierdest moments. You feel like your legs just might let go. I got it today at work walking students back from a rained out field day. I get it when I am sleeping too, it will wake me right up. Thankfully since I get adjusted regularly and try to stay in shape I don't have as many issues.
Mlcvln, I actually come from Mineola, my neighbors office is in FP. I Love FP, I especially love that his office is near Buttercookie...mmmmmmm..... Buttercookie!
