We have this really freaking spider thing outside our door - only I don't think its a spider - its kind of cool looking, because it's legs splayed out make it look like a star! It's been outside our door for a few days - anyone know what the heck kind of insect it is???

Well - it would be a whole ordeal - I was thinking that - but FH has this big professional camera, we'd have to download the pic into our other computer not connected to the internet, save it and upload it here - not worth the bother!

I was actually thinking about that camera he took photos of your trial with. Nice one! But it sounds like a big hasle to take a pic. I don't blame you.
You got me interested now though in knowing what it is!!!!!
Is there a web?

Re: NWR: Anyone know anything about insects?
no - no web, and I'm such a loser - I went back outside to take an other look at him (I was the little girl who would spend her days lifting rocks to see what was underneath!)
he has 7 legs - but I don't know if he lost one? Also, the front 4 legs - you know, 2 on each side of his face are stuck together - and the other 3 legs are sprawled out - thats what makes it look like a star - and his face has these little fangy things - not scary looking at all, and I was poking it with a leaf (FH is like - leave that thing alone already) and he really didn't move - so I don't know if he is just a mellow species, or just dying because he lost a leg...
What the heck is it??? I need to ask one of the students I consult for - he knows everything about every insect ever created (thats one of the many benefits of working with kids on the autism spectrum!!!)

Take a photo of it. Even you don't want to download it right away. Maybe you can do it later and ask your student.
AND THEN let me know.
Except I would have 'touched' it with a LONG stick not a leaf. LOL I am a chicken to touch bugs/spiders.

Re: NWR: Anyone know anything about insects?
I did a search on the internet and it sort of looks like this - bear in mind this is a way blown up pic - the real guy is smaller than a quarter - I think he's dead or dying, which would explain the mellowness - if this is him, he's a grass spider - or was...

It does look like a spider. He could just play dead!!! Some bugs do that!

Doesn't it look like a star?

Look at the 'stud' on the left below the one on top. It probably lost the leg.

Yeah - but what are the chances of this one and the one dying outside my door also missing a leg? Maybe it's something peculiar to the breed?

I don't think so. There is a clear extention out of the body for the leg.
Now.. for the odd! Maybe it's the weather.

I'm not completely sold, and neither is FH, but at least it took the edge off my curiosity tonight...
I have no problem with bugs - we had a HUGE spider living on this fabulous web next to our door (all the bugs seem to come to us - maybe they know its a safe zone?) and in order to make FH's daughters feel better about it, we named him Ralph and told them he was keeping the bugs out of our house... Well - we all got SO attached to Ralph ('Hi Ralph! Good morning Ralph! Good evening Ralph.... 'nite Ralphie!) that FH's youngest daughter was really upset when Ralph passed away shortly before winter descended upon us....
We've had praying mantises hang out by our door too - we are like the hot spot over here - it's always a good idea to hang out on a Buddhist's front porch!!!

I think that is sooo cute though to help her feel better!! I am so petrified of these things (and I'm not truly sure as to why I am) that I can't even get close enough to kill them so I 'shoo' them away and pray they are gone when I return later! It's so stupid that I have to at myself!!

(I won't quote b/c it's so long) You would be my best friend though b/c you'd save me from having a panic attack! Plus I do feel better when they aren't killed...they scare me but don't deserve to die!

Re: NWR: Anyone know anything about insects?
I don't think we need to quote - its not like everyones jumping into this conversation - and we scare them too - probably if they could, they would kill us with their insect brains lacking empathy and all...
