nwr: anyone take solodyn, doxycycline...??
so i just went to the derm. i asked for something for my skin...ive always had breakouts...gotten A LOT better since i was a teenager but still definatley dont have great skin by a long shot. i said that i was open to stuff but didnt want to take anything that would make my skin worse before it would make it better cuz im getting married soon. okay, so she prescribed solodyn. havent taken it yet but reading about it and it seems that EVERYONE has side effects and not very mild ones either. itching all over the place that sometimes causing bruising, bad headaches, bad stomach pain, dizziness and lots of hair loss.anyway now im concerned and thinking of calling and asking her to prescribe something else and i thought of doxy cuz i know a few people who take that but does that also have crazy side effects? i read that you get really sick if you dont eat with it but besides that i havent read about side effects that everyone gets.
anyway, so anyone who ever had experience with either of these two and can tell me about it, id REALLY appreciate it!

Re: nwr: anyone take solodyn, doxycycline...??
I know doxycycline can be hard on the stomach... and you have to take it more frequently, I think twice a day for acne, as opposed to the once a day for Solodyn.Have you tried treating it topically? Keep in mind that all antibiotics have the potential to affect the effectiveness of oral contraceptives as well, I'm not sure if anyone told you that, or even if you're on one... so that may or may not matter to you. I used to take doxy as a teen and stopped cause it bothered my stomach too much.
I'm a pharmacy tech and I can tell you just from what I see every day trend wise that doxycyline is still prescribed a lot more often than the Solodyn... that drug hasn't really seemed to take off. Plus it's way more expensive since it's new and brand only, and doxy has been out ofrever and is generic.
HTH.

my fh takes solodyn and he has never had any side effects. He doesn't get breakouts the dermatologist prescribed it for redness. But since he's been on it, it has cleared up.

doxy is absolutely hard on the stomach. You really must take it with food. I've never taken either but I've seen patients respond EXTREMELY well to both during their courses of treatment.

It definitely is hard on the stomach, I am on doxy now and I have thrown up (TMI i know) in the past because I didnt eat enough on it. Im not sure that it will work long term though, I have been on it for months now and while it worked in the first couple I am thinking that it may not be as effective for me anymore.

Re: nwr: anyone take solodyn, doxycycline...??
FYI- both can decrease the effects of birth control. So, if your on the pill, BE careful!Any medication can cause side effects and basically every medication on the market will list headache, nausea, fatigue, constipation, diarrhea as side effects. Both solodyn and doxycycline are very similar in side effects. Solodyn is a little easier on the stomach and only once a day, but a heck of a lot more expensive (and not covered by a lot of insurance companies)...
I've personally never taken either, but am a pharmacist, so if you have any other questions feel free to ask

Idk anything about solodyn, I can tell you thought with doxy if you plan on tanning before your wedding you can't. it's photosensitive and you will burn really badly. I have seen it. Not myself but it happend to a gf of mine.

Re: nwr: anyone take solodyn, doxycycline...??
I Have tried prolly everything out there on the market. (Minocycline, Doxy, solodyn, Differin, Retn-A, ect..)I have been off meds for a year and went back to a dermatologist about two weeks ago. i have to say the stuff he gave me has (knock on wood) been working amazingly. The antibiotic is a little rough, it tells you to take it on an empty stomach my dermo pre-warned me to make sure i eat when i take it, and to make sure i take it literally with a bottle of water.
He put me on Ampicillin 500 mg 2x a day. Which kills bacteria in the body. I tend to get cystic acne, which hurt like crazy.
and then gave me Epiduo gel. apply a thin layer at night 3x time a week, once that is dried use a good moisturizing cream.
and then he gave me Sulfacetamide Sodium topical to use every morning after i get out of the shower with again a good moisturizer.
This has been working really well. I will warn you though the Epiduo is realllly expensive without insurance it was over $200, with insurance it was still around $85, ask your dr for the rebate card. It is good for up to 3 refills and keeps the cost at $35.
hope this helps.

Re: nwr: anyone take solodyn, doxycycline...??
thank you guys so much! yup, i do know that all antibiotivs can lower the effectiveness of bc...im not on it so no worries on that part.from what you guys said, especially the pharmasicists (ty!!!) and one of my bms is a pharmacist too, i think i might try to solodyn. omg, yes it was super expensive but my derm gave me a card that i could get it for 10 bucks i think three times (hopefully she gives me another card after the three times if i get to that point).
so im a little nervous but i guess ill just have to see about the side affects and then go from there.
she was gonna prescrive something with sulfa in it as a topical but im allergic to sulfa so she gave me something else topical instead. thanks again everyone!!!
now i know this is prob tmi but im just nervous now and gotta call up because i forgot that i have to take this med a week before my period and a week after for the next few months because i had never gotten a yeast infection until december and now apparently im suceptable to them and i got another one in january so now i gotta take this stuff to prevent them and thing is that basically 'anti' biotics are the evillllllllll that causes yeast infections ugh. so now i dont know about how these two meds will interact. ugh thanks!!!!!!
