i have been on the patch for 5 years now. i suffer from really bad migraine headaches since i was a kid & i have noticed recently that i am getting them more & more on my patch free week. (thats when you get your period)
so i am thinking about changing birth controls. if anyone can offer me information about what they are on & the positive & negatives that would be really helpful.
TIA

I also have suffered from migraines since i have been a kid...
and i too get even worse migraines during the week that i dont take any birth control
I am currently on yaz..its probably the 9th birth control i have been on...nothing seems to work right..
anyway, within the last 2 months, my neurologist helped me find something to control my migraines...its called topomax...i take it everynight before i go to bed.. my migraines have went from once a week to like once a month, and the dose can be increased next time i go back so they become even less frequent...also, they gave me treximet for when i do get a migraine, and they are the only thing i have found so far that will actually take my migraines away; although, they knock me out for about 5 hours...definitely worth it though
love topomax, been on it for over a year now and i don't know how i survived without it before
do u have any side effects from it?

I am using Nuvaring. I LOVE it. This is the ONLY method of Birth Control I have ever used that hasn't caused me ANY issues or problems.

There is a bcp called Mircette. You may want to think about that. It's 21 days of hormones, then 2 placebos (sugar pills) and 5 days of very low estrogen pills. That may be good for your migraines because you don't go a whole 7 days w/o estrogen. You only go 2 days without it, and then you get a very low dose for the last 5 days of your cycle. Make sense?

Re: NWR: birth control
I have found that with any of the BCP's I take my migraines come back. I started getting migraines at age 11 with visual aura's (loss of vision). They actually went away completely after the age of 18 untill I started BCP's. All of a sudden they came back again. I went through 3 diff. kinds of pills (ortho tri, ortho low, estrostep fe) and all brought back the migraines. As soon as I stop them bam no migraines. My new gyno actually says she does not rec. BCP's for people who get migraines with visual auras as the risk of stroke is greater so its condoms for me. HTH

I'm also on Nuvaring and I love it. I always forgot to take some pills so that gets rid of that problem. I haven't had any noticeable side effects.
The only down side for me is that it doesn't help with my acne as much as Yaz did. Otherwise, I think its great and FH doesn't notice it.

Re: NWR: birth control
I've been on Yaz for about a year and I don't have any major complaints really.
I have had some spotting and I did gain weight, but maybe that's just my fault!!

I'm meeting w/my gyno to discuss the Mirena IUD...I hate taking the pills, I always forget
Just be sure that you want an IUD... I didn't know we were going to get engaged so soon & was sick of the pills because I was getting constant yeast infections from them. So my gyno had brought up the idea of an IUD because I figured we wouldn't have a baby for a few years. So I decided to go for it...He tried the Mirena but my uterus would not take to it . It is supposed to go in fine with women who have had a child, but no one told me all of this before. Let me tell you..this was THE ABSOLUTE most painful 25 minutes of my life..I really think I am now prepared for child birth....I was like climbing the walls...finally he decided to just try the Paragard which is the copper one. Ok great it took in less than a minute!.. Well the last 11 months were a living hell having it! Between the constant cramping, horrible periods, & the never ending bacterial infections..then to make matters worse a NP friend of ours said that it is not good to have one if you haven't had a baby yet because it can cause infertility. Which I had heard, but I guess I just wasn't thinking about seriously enough until now. I didn't want this stupid thing anymore so I had it removed last month & went back on the pill. Microgestin Fe/20 the generic for LoEstrin...My emotions are a little crazy partly because of the pill & now my body is trying to make all of the hormones that it had stopped. So I think its a combination but I'm so much happier.
I know everyone's body is different, but I wouldn't want anyone having to go through this so I figured I'd share incase anyone wasn't sure about it. So for anyone who is thinking about getting an IUD if you haven't had a baby yet, just make sure you really want it & are prepared for all of the things that may come along with it.

Re: NWR: birth control
I was on Estrostep for about 2 years. After a month or two, my periods were like 3 days and like clockwork as well. No weight gain but sometimes I was emotional. I went off of it because I wanted my body to start working on its own as well.

Re: NWR: birth control
I am on Yaz as well....I get migraines towards the end of the pack with visual auras and all...the migraines are horrible. But every time I've stopped the pill I am reminded of why I started, I have irregular periods with horrible cramps and heavy bleeding (tmi I know)! So I deal with the migraines and when I get the aura I pop some Advil and migraine medicine and head for the bed if I can....it beats the alternative in my book.!!
