Does anyone have any experience with this? We were given 3 options... all of which pretty much s*ck.
Is there any other way to get around this?
One of the options is to sublet the apartment (we'll most likely try this even though it seems impossible)... the second is to just pay out the remainder of the lease, how they consider that 'breaking the lease' is beyond me... and the last is to forfeit our security deposit and fork over another two months rent 'minimum'...

Re: NWR: Breaking Our Lease
Do you need this current person you are renting from to be a reference for your rental history? If not, can't you say you can't afford your rent blah blah blah and whatever (got laid off?). I know there are exceptions to the lease somehow.
ETA: I known that lying like that isnt the best route but I have been seeing ALOT of people saying to their landlords lately they can't afford the rent, the will be out in 2 weeks

We're renting from a complex and since we're buying we don't need them as a reference. Hmmmmm... that's actually not a bad idea... I hate this complex so I don't care if it is lying!!!

They can't MAKE you pay ya know. You need to move out because you can't afford it. Period. The only way that will bite you in the a ss is if you need them as a reference in the future

Re: NWR: Breaking Our Lease
unfortunately it really does s*ck! i b*tched enough to our landlord that I convinced him to just keep the security, still kind of s*cked but at least I got away without paying another 2 months on top of that. i would just complain every single day....even if you know an attorney, just have them send a letter stating you are breaking the lease end of story.....most likely they won't come after you bc its not worth the legal fees in the end. good luck!

Re: NWR: Breaking Our Lease
our lease is until july--we are hopefully going to get a house. so if its before we either still pay the rest and have 2 payments-or try to sublet it and collect the money from them and not tell our development. how would they know if you or someone else lives there??

Re: NWR: Breaking Our Lease
Subleting is the best option... once you sign a lease and the company is intent on following that lease there is nothing you can do... i worked in property management for 5 years

In your experience did anyone EVER get out of their lease?

Not when the company gives you that ultimatum...
The only time ive seen it done is because there was a medical reason or job reason that they had to move out of state....

That was the reason we gave them... that FH was being transfered for work... they didn't care.
So even if someone lost their job they would still go after that person for the rent?

is he? or was that just the excuse? because they would want proof most likely... a notarized letter from the company would work...
And yes 9 times out of 10 they would go after the person

He isn't but that is the excuse we gave. We're buying a house and closing will most likely be towards the end of November/beginning of December and our lease isn't up until the end of June. When he called them they didn't ask for proof they just said they would mail a letter with our three options...

Re: NWR: Breaking Our Lease
not sure if this helps...but my former boss (who was a NOTORIOUS BS-er) claimed that you can get out of a lease if you are BUYING property. so this would apply in your case
its not a national law..but it might be a NYS or county thing
not sure if its true, because i was never in a situation where i neeeded to verify it
but it might be something to look into (ANY LAWYERS OUT THERE WANNA HELP?)
as i said, former boss was a total bs-artist, so i dont want to speak with certainty about anything that he said...but it may be worth looking into
good luck! keep us updated!
