NWR: CAN I ASK A QUESTION?!

Original post by HeatherLynna

I know this is probably uncalled for on these boards, but I just need to say it. WHYYYY is Obama NEVER at any of these 9/11 memorial services??????? It makes me SO angry.

I don't understand at all how it would take away from the victims' families. I saw Joe Biden there. He doesn't need to give a speech or anything. How about just be there to show support?

bc of the amount of security that would need to be there. people would have to go through metal detectors, bags checked, when all they want is a place to honor their loved ones in peace

ETA - i'm referring to ground zero. obviously he should do something today, thats why in my orig post i said the pentagon. obviously he will acknowledge today

they also try to separate the president and vp during events like this just in case there is ever some sort of attack.

Amen sista! I find there is always an excuse with this administration for everything what makes his security diffrent then it was for Bush. Its fustrating but whatever. And hey thanks to being american where we can have a debate :o)

I worry more about the neighbor who wants to kill the 'dirty muslims' than where the president is today.

I don't understand why it's always about what our figurehead does or doesn't do when people don't do anything themselves. If people want someone at ground Zero....go there and show support. Or create a group that helps people rather than watching tv and rehashing events that happened 9 years ago.

Im sorry but the obama / bush thing makes me nuts bc in the end its all about us. How we make this world better. How about on a day like today we volunteer at a shelter or gather items and bring them to a VA hospital?

I swear we're so much less tolerant in this country than we used to be and i feel like we use tragic dates for excuses. If you hate the govt officials how about running for local offices?

Just saying.

Believe me.. my day is about mourning victims as well. That is the reason I even know Obama is not there- because I have the news on all day watching people honor those we lost- of course without the president of the United States in attendance.

We're New Yorkers. Ground Zero is the focus of 9/11 for us. But we lost people at the Pentagon too. And in PA. Plus, Obama's whole thing is that he wants to try to turn 9/11 into a day of service -- people coming together to do something for the community to commemorate those who were lost. Like in the aftermath of 9/11. And rather unlike the partisan rancor that has followed.

If you don't want to start a political war on LIW, you shouldn't then say that 'This just adds to his pile of uselessness for me.'

(I understand your side, but I think there are other factors to consider. And now I'll stop commenting too)

ETA: nicely said, Amy.

I'm really not going to bother responding to you quoting me except to say that I should be able to state my opinion on him without turning it into an LIW war. Thanks.

Amy, I think that is a great idea. However, it really isn't that easy. There is so much more that goes into it than just people volunteering. I have volunteered plenty of times, but it doesn't change my opinion on our president's whereabouts(and other things that he does). The simple fact that he is the president of our country is why his actions get judged. I couldn't care less what color or religion he is.

you're of course entitled to your opinion! but imo i think you had very strong ill feelings about him prior to this and now anything he does is judged by you---(i know, i used to do that with Bush) when like everyone said the president and VP dont normally attend the same event together bec g-d forbid things can happen to both if something goes wrong.

You are absolutely right. I am not a fan of him. I understand the security factor though. However, this isn't the only event where he was a no show. There have been headlines about many of them. I think that it is safe to say that this thread is going to be divided into people that are Obama supporters and people who are not- something that I did think about before I posted- but I posted nonetheless because I think it is awesome that we are able to express our opinions.

Bide went to ny, Obama wife in pa and Obama was the the pentagon and yes security was the number one thing they brought up prior to splitting up. Is it right no but they broke it up that way hey its politics I have a degree in it and still doesn't make sense

I understand about the security and all, but still feel like an appearance would help people feel at ease and feel supported. It saddens me as well.

I was watching the memorial all morning and aside from Obama and politics, one woman made a good point when she said 'this is a sacred site and we should keep it like that'....

with all the controversy about the mosque...i am glad someone said something to make u think....

PS: does anyone know if there were any protests today?
