NWR: CAN I ASK A QUESTION?!

I know this is probably uncalled for on these boards, but I just need to say it. WHYYYY is Obama NEVER at any of these 9/11 memorial services??????? It makes me SO angry.

I agree, but its probably a huge security risk. Not to mention it would take away from the victims families and the day being about them and their loved ones.

I would assume he would do something by the Pentagon tho??

I don't understand at all how it would take away from the victims' families. I saw Joe Biden there. He doesn't need to give a speech or anything. How about just be there to show support?

bc of the amount of security that would need to be there. people would have to go through metal detectors, bags checked, when all they want is a place to honor their loved ones in peace

ETA - i'm referring to ground zero. obviously he should do something today, thats why in my orig post i said the pentagon. obviously he will acknowledge today

They don't need that type of security for the vice president? I think it's a cop out.

You have no idea how much I agree with this. He can find time to go on The View, though.

I agree with the security thing.... Usually the VP doesn't get as much security detail as the President. Is Bush there? I don't think so for the same reasons...

Bush isn't the current president. He WAS there when he was.

Obama gets an incredible amount more security compared to Biden. Some ridiculous percentage of the nation believes that Obama is a Muslim out to get America. If Obama went to Ground Zero, they'd likely have to close streets in the area and put in tighter security checks, which would make it harder for the families and mourners to get there.

i used to live across from the UN and when obama was in town i had to show a utility bill proving i lived there just to walk to my apt. all the streets were closed within a 10 block radius and there were snipers on my roof. i didnt have to show crap when biden was there, nor where any of the streets closed

i completely agree he should be at a memorial, which he is - the pentagon

i don't think ground zero is a good idea, especially with everything going on with the mosque being built on ground zero and the pastor threatening to burn the quran on 9/11

it would have been a huge security liability, especially this year.

Okay either way, I wasn't trying to start a political war on LIW. Just wanted to state how I felt. I obviously won't change my views of why he wasn't there and I'm sure others will continue to defend him.

I agree. However, there have been other times that he hasn't been where people would expect the President of the United States to be. It's not just this place. This just adds to his pile of uselessness for me.

ITA. Obama has threats to his life way more than anyone else because he is such a controversial and dividing president, unfortunately a lot to do with the color of his skin and the unfounded rumors people opposing him give media coverage to. Bush never had the same kind of threats, despite questionable politics.

Can you even imagine if there was an assassination at Ground Zero?! The country would be a mess, I don't even want to think about what it would mean for the country and the world.

I think they are doing it the right way, and right now I'm going to turn my attention back to mourning with the victims, and away from politics, which is what this day should be about.

Believe me.. my day is about mourning victims as well. That is the reason I even know Obama is not there- because I have the news on all day watching people honor those we lost- of course without the president of the United States in attendance.

exactly, its very diff to compare his presidency to Bush's presidency for example. there are many people that want this man dead. Him attending the pentg memorial versus the NY one has nothing to do with his disrespect to the 9/11 imo.

He did speak at the Pentagon today -- he is the Commander in Chief. Video courtesy of Fox News here: video. And his schedule says he's taking part in a service project in the DC area today to commemorate 9/11.

Even though I started this, I'm going to end my participation in this discussion now because I don't want to get any deeper into it.
