nwr: career change

nwr: career change

i am so miserable with my job. This will be my 5th year teaching. I loved it my first 3 years when I taught math. Then I switched schools and started teaching English (what I thought I always wanted to teach) and I HATE it. Im teaching summer school math now and it's been difficult. I think I'm just burnt. I dont know if it's the school or just not for me anymore. It sucks because it's good pay, great benefits, and a great schedule especially when we have kids...but that is not a reason to stay. im miserable.

i am literally getting anxiety over thinking about returning here in September.

I've been thinking of maybe going back to school for something else..something in the medical field maybe. I just know FH and I want to start having babies soon and I feel like going to school will slow everything done...i dont know.

I would even just do office work at this point. I just want something with benefits since FH doesn't have them. I just feel so lost and it's so depressing.

any advice??

i went to grad school for teaching. loved it in the beginning and since i had a hard time finding a job i got a little bitter towards the education system.

i explored other options and im on my 3rd non teaching job since graduating last May.. ive worked in an office through the summer, retail on the weekends and nights, and now currently looking for a new job.

even thought the schedule of teaching is amazing, its not the reason to do it. you have NO IDEA how many people tell me, 'youre crazy to not want to teach.. its the perfect job for a woman who wants to have kids.'

yea, in theory it is... but not is you dont like it!!!! ive put teaching on hold for now, maybe ill go back when the job market clears up or after i raise our kids (we're planning on me being a stay at home mom for a while) but right now its not in me.

you will be doing yourself and the students an injustice if your hearts not in it.

life is too short.. do what will make you happy!!
i know its a hard decision to make, especially bc people are knocking down school doors to get a job but think it through and be confident in your decision!

good luck!

i'm a lawyer and i can definitively say we NEED smart people as administrative assistants. i would rely on my secretary for sooo much more if she could handle it. i say everyday how i think it's a great job (good pay, good benefits, TOTALLY 9-5), and it's a shame that smart people don't go into it.

i'm not sure how rewarding of a job it is, but if you were smart, you'd get a lot more substantive responsibility and could take an interest in your work.

eta: it's a shame MORE smart people don't go into it. i don't mean to stereotype admin assts.

ITA. i went to college for teaching and got my degree. but during student teaching in my last year of college, i realized i didnt want to do it. it didnt make me happy. but i had to finish it out and i applied for teaching jobs everywhere and started substitite teaching the next year just to try it out. well i still didnt like it and i left the field. i've now been at my current job for 4 years and its more 'me' than teaching was.

and i heard the same comments about staying in teaching cause its great for women, all the benefits, summers off, blah blah blah. especially from my parents who thought my who college experience was such a waste of money since i didnt use my degree. but im better off now!

Your post made me feel better! What do you do now if you don't mind me asking?

FH supports my decision 100%, but everyone else thinks I'm nuts. I dont care at this point.

i'm a buyer. but i started out as an admin asst. and got promoted twice within my 4 years working here!

definitely do what you think will make you happy in the long run. its the worst when you dread waking up and going to work.

I need one too. I hate working in an office. Really, been doing it for 6 years. I want to stab myself in the eye.

After the wedding I'm going to interview around. I either want to cook or work with animals.

Figure out what you don't like. Is it the school, the subject, grade level, or just plain teaching? If it's something other than just teaching, maybe there's something you can change to improve your situation. Can you try going back to math for a year? Is there an administrative position available within the school? Do some soul searching before you make a move...

see there are a lot of different types of admin assistants and it seems like maybe the 'smart' people get stuck in the ones that they should be. i'm not calling myself a genius or anything, but i'm smart and i HATE being an admin asst. my boss gives me a lot to do... but stuff he should be doing himself or that other people should be doing. researching his personal vacations, buying a steamcleaner to clean the office carpets, stocking the refridgerator with soda for the whole office, etc. etc. you get the idea. if the work was more substantially and thought provoking, yea i may like it. but it's not. it's boring and feels like slave labor so i hate it.

that's how i felt about my job when i was an admin too. i hated doing things for people when i knew they were fully capable of doing it themselves. i didnt like the job description lol.

I'm a teacher who just got excessed. I might be changing careers. I loved teaching but the job market is horrible for teachers right now.

I started getting my degree in education, until I realized I was not cut out for spending a 8 hour day in a classroom. I switched to social work and couldn't be happier. There are always jobs and while 90% of the time it is difficult, the 10% that you actually help someone is the most rewarding feeling ever!!

I actually went to school to be an English teacher and am still looking for a job.

I can totally understand how overwhelming it is. I do get scared that once I do find a job, it's just going to be too much.

Whatever the case may be, you shouldn't stay somewhere if you are unhappy.

The healthcare industry is definitely the place to be right now, and I know waiting to get the degree and move forward will not be very fun, but it will probably be worth it in the long run.

Good luck to you!

What is it that you hate about it?

Thank you all for your opinions, thoughts, kind words. I appreciate it.

I hate the school. I hate the administration. I hate the day to day ********. The kids at this school are disgusting...no respect for anyone...it's a horrible environment..im tired of having kids curse me at, speak disgusting to me, etc.

My first 3 years I did not have these classroom management problems...it;s getting worse, when it should be getting easier. SO maybe it is just this new school (I'm a city teacher by the way), but i am so burnt out from this school and this treatment, and it's left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

I have applied to other schools, but nothing so far. I just feel done.
