Re: NWR: COntact Lens Wearers
i use Renu and have not had any problems. i think the problem is more people don't take care of their lenses and that is causing the problem.

Re: NWR: Contact Lens Wearers
Is this the new one? I think that's what I use
btw, how the heck do you wear your lenses OVERNIGHT?!? (if they are not made for that?) I fell asleep once with my contacts in for a few hours and it was horrible getting them out!

Yeah its says hygiene plays a role and i'm fanatical about keeping my lenses fresh and clean. I think as long as you take care of them you will be fine!

Re: NWR: Contact Lens Wearers
I didn't see the article in Newsday, but I am a clinical microbiologist and read the original MMWR report on this (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report - a very uplifting publication ).
Basically, there was an unusually large number of a specific fungal eye infections (Fusarium keratitis; Fusarium is a type of fungus). There were 109 cases, and of these, they had interviewed 30 of the patients.
Of the 30 patients interviewed, 28 were contact lens wearers. All 28 lens wearers were asked what solution they used. 26 remembered which solution it was, and all 26 used ReNu.
An investigation is on-going to determine whether the solution was a factor.
Fusarium keratitis can be treated with antifungal medication if caught in time; if not, corneal transplant is required.
IF the solution was the problem (ie: if it was contaminated), keeping your lenses clean with contaminated solution is not going to help.
My public health service announcement for the day is to wash your hands well with soap and water before handling your lenses and see your eye dr. if you have any eye problems, including redness, tearing, pain, sensitivity to light, etc. Infection is not the only significant eye problem - just yesterday a woman I work with had emergency laser surgery on her eye to correct a retinal tear. If left, it could have required a more major surgery to correct. Keep your eyes healthy!!!
I'll be chucking my ReNu solution. And probably wearing my glasses for a couple of days because eye infections skeeve me out!

If you are thinking of changing your CL solution, I recommend Allergan Complete. I used to work for an ophthalmologist and tried pretty much everything on the market - Allergan Complete really keeps your lenses moist.

I used the ReNu MoistureLoc and I bought a two pack a month or so ago. Should I chuck this? I've been using it and have had no problems but I don't want to take any chances. Ick.

Re: NWR: Contact Lens Wearers
Ok, unless you store your lenses in the solution for ages you will get eye fungus...I wear the disposable lenses (I change them every 3 weeks), take them out at night and always clean them...I've been wearing contact lenses for years...so unless you're a slob, you have nothing to worry about.

Does that work for soft lenses also? My eyes are so dry, I have to put drops every 1 to 2 hours when I wear my contacts.

Re: NWR: Contact Lens Wearers
that's funny, because i got fitted for new contacts yesterday and the eye doctor mentioned it (i hadn't heard). the doctor said the report was still unsubstantiated but that she personally used opti-free because she liked it best.
