(NWR) Embarrassed to admit this:

I consider myself to be pretty level-headed and I'm usually a 'tuff' cookie (at least that's what my friends and family say, whether I think that's true or not I don't know lol)... But I'm absolutely terrified of what I have to do in just FOUR days: get on a plane and fly to Barbados.

I know it sounds silly but I can't help it and I'm getting more and more scared as Friday morning 7am approaches... I think winning the trip at the LIW Anniversary Party happened for a reason because it's forcing me to GET OVER IT and get on that plane and I'm SO happy and blessed to have won it but I'm still so scared (and I'm not scared of a lot of things-- we own a snake!! lol).

I hate flying though, I hate the idea of my life in someone else's hands. I don't know why girls but I'm so scared... anyone else in my position or can offer some words of advice/encouragement? Sorry this is a little long-- help me out here.

I can relate... and we'll be on a 12 1/2 hour flight for our HM in 21 days!!!

I can't really give you any advice since i'm going to need it also, but are you going with your fiance? My FH absolutely LOVES flying so I think flying with him will be a little easier on me.

you are going to be fine - you're going to have SUCH a great time once you get there, and I know Vinny would never let anything happen to you.

honey I know how you feel. I'm terrified of flying and even though I've flown several times, it still scares me.
I'm the weakest person and when I'm on a plane whosever hand I hold I squeeze so hard I hurt them. FH is strong and a big guy, and even he said he thought I was going to break his hand when he flew with me.

Once we're in the air for 15minutes and theres no turblence I'm fine, just try to take deep breaths, listen to some music have a drink even if it'll help.

Its so hard to get over fears. But once you do it you will feel much better. You are safer in a plane then in your own car. We dont think twice before we get in a car. You can do this....You are a strong girl....Once you are there you will agree its the best thing you could have done. Just think of the final result peace of mind on a beach with a drink in hand.

DONT BE SCARED! I remember reading a stat back in the day that if the number of car crashes per week was compared to the number of flights per week, there would be like 1,000 plane crashes PER WEEK.

It really is the safest way to travel.... !

yes, i'm going with vinny-- THANK GOD.

i think my fear comes from a somewhat reasonable place. i've had some pretty bad experiences. i've flown maybe 5 times total in my life and one time: we dropped altitude in MID AIR randomly about 2,000 feet in about 3 seconds... so bad, people who didn't have their belts on flew up and hit their heads on the ceiling of the airplane. another time, lightning struck the wing of our plane. another time: we landed on one wheel and skidded off the runway when coming in. another time, there was so much turbulance that the flight attendants put all the food/drinks away and sat down, buckeled up and started rubbing their heads and praying-- one of them started to cry!!!!!

I mean, out of the five times I've flown-- four of them were near nightmares: THOSE are not good odds!!!!! So I think those experiences make me scared b/c since then, when I fly or think about flying I just re-live those things and worse happening-- and 9/11 didn't make it much better, plus, this is my first time flying since then

Re: (NWR) Embarrassed to admit this:

I totally understand. I'm not even sure how my fear of flying got so bad. (I used to be ok with it.) For take off and landing, just close your eyes, take deep breaths...try not to freak yourself out. As for the rest of the flight, my ipod saves me during flying. Just stock up on some great music and try not to think about it. Some of the airlines have the individual screens, so you can check how far your plane is from the destination, etc. That also helped me. (but then I probably looked nuts b/c I kept checking it..haha) Either way, try not to stress yourself out too much. The way you make yourself feel just from stressing is 10 times worse than the flight. Before you realize, you'll be landing and can enjoy your vacation!! HTH!

yes, it's MUCH safer than a car-- you are right and i totally understand that. but something makes me feel better about the fact that I'M behind the wheel in control of the car versus some pilot i dont know-- you know what i mean?? vinny said he thinks my whole problem surrounds CONTROL and that i'm afraid of not having any.

he's so freudian

yes, the ipod and all the other suggestions are great ones-- thank you. i'm def going to listen to a lot of johnny cash-- if i'm going out, i'm going out listening to johnny cash dammit!! cuz he's the effing man...

i just hope, if i do crash-- it's during landing, thats when the chances of survival are at the most b/c the plane is almost empty of fuel--- see how crazy i am?!! i know these facts b/c i look them up-- b/c i'm NUTS!!!!!!

Re: (NWR) Embarrassed to admit this:

If it's really bad, schedule an appointment with your doctor and maybe he/she can prescribe anti-anxiety medication. My FH got some Xanax before our flight to Ireland, and didn't even have to take it. He just needed to have that crutch in case he actually had to take a pill, but knowing it was there was enough to calm him.

Re: (NWR) Embarrassed to admit this:

I fly at least 4 times a month for work and I still get a little nervous before.

I promise you it will be fine as soon as you board the plane. I think it's the anticipation of traveling that gets to everyone the most.

Not that I'm a pill pusher but for some of my longer flights ( I flew 14 hours to Tahiti and 12 to Turkey) my doctor has prescribed me Xanax. I am asleep before take off and usually wake up on the ground..very nice!!

You can also take Tylenol PM.
