So we moved my FBIL into college yesterday at University of Scranton. It's about 2.5 hours away from his parents. But on the way home, he called and says he hates it already. It was barely 2 hours that he was there alone in the dorm. Then this morning he called 3 times saying he wanted to come home today and transfer to St. Johns and live at home. I'm just so sad for him. He won't even give it a fair shot to see if he likes living in a dorm. We spent all this time moving him up, and he tells us a day later that he never wanted to live away from home. He couldn't have told us BEFORE we moved him in? I think he's selling himself short by not even giving it a chance. We don't know what to do. At first his parents were just going to take him home, but I KNOW that is a mistake. So now when he calls home we're going to see if he'll try staying in the dorm for the week and his parents will drive the 2.5 hours to pick him up every Friday and drop him off every Sunday. So at least he'll be home and happy every weekend. But I really wish he would give this a shot. He's just so stubborn. I hope it works out for him.

Re: NWR--FBIL hates college already
Once he makes new friends and I'm sure he'll be fine. It's just a big adjustment and he has to take time to get used to it. That is nice of his parents to pick him up each weekedn though!

I am afraid that he has already gotten it in his head that he hates it, and won't even try to make any friends. He's not open to any of this.

Re: NWR--FBIL hates college already
A soon as my parents left me at school I went to orientation and threw up. I was cranky and miserable until I found FRATERNITY PARTIES!!! Hmm at my first one, I met FH!
Anyway, I would make him stick it out for a bit. If a family can afford to sent their child AWAY to school, it is an experience unlike any other and would be a pity to miss.

Living away from his parents for the first time is probably very scary. Hopefully he will meet some people that will change is mind. Not everyone is cut out for living in a dorm, but I would advise him to try to stick it out for a little while and give it a shot. If he still does not like it he can always transfer next semester. If he's really not happy after the first semester I would say transfer immediately...not worth grades suffering.

That's what I was thinking, but his school doesn't have franternties. I just hope that there are enough activities that he can meet people and have fun. It's a Jesuit school, so they are a little strict with the coed thing. Like his hall his hall is all guys, and in the rulebook they say he can't have girls stay over in his room. But I'm sure that rule was meant to be broken!

I felt this way too for the first weekend or so. It turned into by far the BEST time in my life! I wish I could just go back in time for a few days! Dorm life was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try to get him to give ONE semester a shot.

I feel exactly this way! But his parents say that if St. Johns is willing to take him for this semester, then he'll come home tomorrow and start classes on Wednesday. I think this is a big mistake.

Re: NWR--FBIL hates college already
I HATED COLLEGE for about the first 3 weeks...I felt like everyone was making friends and I wasn't...it was a hard adjustment. And to make matters even worse...my mom was blabbing to people at her school (about how upset I was) who had sibblings at the college I went to...And these beoches rubbed it in that I was miserable.
But then I started making friends and before long I loved school!!
COllege is a hard adjustment for many people

Re: NWR--FBIL hates college already UPDATE
Well, FH's parents called this morning, and St. John's will take his brother. So it's all over. He's leaving University of Scranton. I am so disappointed in him. He decided he hated dorm life 2 hours after being there, and he didn't even try to like it. This is way worse than failing at something. He couldn't even give it a week! I am so angry right now.

Thats too bad...but its his life and he needs to be happy. He definetely should have given it more time but its his decision

If he really can't manage to stay there and St. Johns will take him. He should consider dorming there. I know he will be close to home but at least he could have the best of both worlds and come home whenever he needs to. It may seem like a waste of money to dorm so close to home, but he should try to make the most out of his college years. Living in a dorm gave me an awakening to how the rest of the world is. It teaches you about people you never thought you'd ever meet.

It's actually dorm life that he hates (sharing a bathroom, etc). Besides, St. John's has very limited dorming. I know he'll be fine there, but I'm just disappointed that he could try it out for a while. There are kids that would kill to be able to dorm but can't afford it.

Re: NWR--FBIL hates college already UPDATE
Oh well I tried! I never had separation issues as a kid. I went to sleepaway camp for many years and adjusted well. I got sick when my parents left me at school but got over it fast choking it up to a new transition. I LOVED dorming but then again, I went to Syracuse University where some of the dorms were coed by room. I bet he would feel different if he had some girls running around in their towels after a shower!

Re: NWR--FBIL hates college already UPDATE
For some kids it's separation and some people just hate dorms. I'm one of the latter. Hate dorms! I used to visit Fh and in his freshman year he had a regular dorm with the comunal bathrooms on each floor and the skeeved me out so bad I wanted to puke everytime I had to take a shower. blah! not for me! But maybe he'll get used to it!
