So we moved my FBIL into college yesterday at University of Scranton. It's about 2.5 hours away from his parents. But on the way home, he called and says he hates it already. It was barely 2 hours that he was there alone in the dorm. Then this morning he called 3 times saying he wanted to come home today and transfer to St. Johns and live at home. I'm just so sad for him. He won't even give it a fair shot to see if he likes living in a dorm. We spent all this time moving him up, and he tells us a day later that he never wanted to live away from home. He couldn't have told us BEFORE we moved him in? I think he's selling himself short by not even giving it a chance. We don't know what to do. At first his parents were just going to take him home, but I KNOW that is a mistake. So now when he calls home we're going to see if he'll try staying in the dorm for the week and his parents will drive the 2.5 hours to pick him up every Friday and drop him off every Sunday. So at least he'll be home and happy every weekend. But I really wish he would give this a shot. He's just so stubborn. I hope it works out for him.

Re: NWR--FBIL hates college already UPDATE
That's too bad that he's coming home already. The same thing happened to my cousin last year...I think he made it a day and just hated where he was (Eastern Connecticut State U.) because there was nothing to do there, so my aunt and uncle brought him home. I was disappointed that he didn't give it more of a chance, but he's really much happier going to school close to home. Some kids get swept up by the idea of going away to school, only to realize that it's not for them once they're actually there. Plus, you never know...perhaps in a year or two your FBIL will want to try going away again! Either way, I hope he's very successful at St. John's.

that's too bad that he is coming home already- I think he will regret it in the future
his parents should have made him stay 1 semester- I bet he wouldn't have wanted to leave :(
i agree. my sister had a really hard time adjusting to college too - she came home every weekend for 2 months (from CT). But once she hit her groove, she LOVED college (more than any other person I know!)

What gets me is I KNOW in my heart that he would have loved it after getting used to it. He's such a social kid and his roomate was sooo nice and definitely into the same things as he is (computers, anime, etc). It's just too bad he'll never know how much fun it could have been.

that's sad that he came home already. he might end up regretting this decision in years to come. he really could have just done this semester and transferred later on!
it's such a hard thing for kids - i wish him the best of luck!

Re: NWR--FBIL hates college already UPDATE
My sister is alread telling her 13 year old that he is going to Queens College and thats it - no choices. She says it is because she can't afford any other school but I think it is BS. She can't let go and it would kill her for him to be away and not have a child to control. He is a great kid but needs to know what it is like to fall down sometimes rather than have 'Mommy' coddle him and do everything for him. I told my sister that not everyone could afford college the way our father did and that she should take loans or get aid like everyone else does. Let the kid go away to school to learn what is like to have to take care of himself! She will be doing him out of the best time of his life.

They should make him stay for at least the first coule of weekends. That's when epopel really socialize and make friends, plus he'll be labelled as the dork who goes home every weekend. If you miss those first few weeks when everyone is meeting and greeting, you'll be out of the loop forever!

I didn't go to school and that is one of my biggest regrets. My mom told me at the time I would regret is and I was too stubborn to listen... and look what happened!

I know!! It's crazy to take away this experience for someone! I can't believe FBIL's parents even gave him the option of coming home. Now it'll be just like highschool and he won't have the experience of living on his own, which I think is very important.
