NWR: FIRST YEAR TEACHING

Original post by Aristotelina

I just needed to vent/ask for advice.

I'm a first year Special Ed teacher who is teaching 5th grade ED/LD students. I am feeling SOOO deflated and stressed lately. I feel like I am NOT doing a good job and I feel like I am being constantly berated/watched.

Is it normal to feel this way during your first year of school? I feel like I made the wrong choice by becoming a teacher.

Thanks so much ladies!!

Lauren and Angela, thank you for the FM's!! You got mail btw!

Mrs. Larrea--OMG, are you serious? Now that you give me that perspective I guess I was LUCKY to have him suspended!! I mean kids nowadays have very little respect as it is, but I always keep in mind that my kids are ED. I mean, I let him slide A LOT, but I had it when he physically threatened me. I just wanted him to realize that even verbal threats HAVE CONSEQUENCES!! Ya know what I mean?

p.s.--I love the 'blah blah blah' line. I use it too!

It's funny b.c this whole time I was like, 'oh boy I really hope I didnt say anything innapropriate again... ' , but in any event, the minute any teacher is physically threatenead, it is an automatic suspension. In fact it becomes a superintendent suspension...which is considered the 'ultimate suspension' b.c we can request to have the kid out of school for months!
One kid I know has been suspended for a year!
But have no fear! The kid is still entittled to an education, and he/she is assigned to a diff. school during diff. hours.

But it is a little diff. in your case since you work w. ED kids. I am not sure what the procedure is, but I'm sure they try a lot of counseling until they really have no other choice.

p.s. Have you tried using the blablabla line on FH? I did it once, and FH was sooooo mad!!! LOL. Talk about ED !

...My colleagues all tell me how wonderful I am doing for a first year teacher but my administration is pretty quiet and unsupportive. Two weeks ago one of my students CURSED ME OUT and they didnt' even want to suspend him!!

Welcome to the board of ed. I'm a dean, and teachers get cursed out daily at my school. Unfortunately all I can do is tell them to call home or talk to their AP's. ONLY if the problem continues, 'maybe' we can give him/her detention. If the kid curses out 'every' teacher, then we can move for a suspension.

Most of the time when a kid curses out a teacher, administration blames the teacher...'well, what did the teacher do to provoke the kid?' ....it's pretty sick. I don't agree w. it. ESPECIALLY if it's always the same teacher complaining about diff. kids. Then the teacher is seen as a person w. classroom management problems.

But don't feel bad. It's not your fault that these kids have no manners. But def. call the kids house and speak to his parents. Whatever you do...do not show the kid that you were offended. Whenever a kid said anything bad to me, I would just tell him/her, ' blablabla... u done yet? Feel better? great, now give me your id. ' LOL. They would get so mad, b.c it really didnt bother me.

The opinion of your colleagues is what really matters. If they are supportive and tell you that you are doing a great job, it's for a reason. Give yourself some credit girl!

The Administration is the very same in my district. . . everything is the teacher's fault. A kid 'shoved' me b.c he was trying to fight and all he got was one day of class suspension from my class. I was like umm. . .he touched me!! They didn't care.

Hi there. I am also a 5th grade teacher, and I work with the special ed. population as well. The first year is SO overwhelming, but you will get used to it. And the job only gets better and better. I'm not sure when you posted your comment, but hang in there!!

ps...And remember - summer is just around the corner!

Thank you Patsy!!!

Mrs. Larrea--technically he could have had a superintendent's suspension but the principal was VERY against it, in fact, she didn't even want to suspend him AT ALL but because I was very vocal about it and my AP was behind me, he got suspended for 3 days. And it was easy for him to get suspended because he's not legally classified as ED because 'it's too much paperwork'

but that's a WHOLEEEE nother story!!!

FYI: the only reason principals are against suspending kids is b.c they are under review as well. At the end of the year they have to submit a summary of all their suspensions. The lower the # the better the principal looks b.c these stupid educrats 'assume' that they have good control over the school. they dont realize that they look over bad behavior. It's all about numbers and statistics. It's a big game. You either play along or do something about it. I am choosing to play along for now until I am in a position to act....and hopefully change things.

Re: NWR: FIRST YEAR TEACHING

6th grade teacher here! This is my second year teaching and this year is worse than my first year last year. I have both Spec and Gen Ed kids in my room and the Spec Ed kids give me run for my money every single day! They either have behavior issues or completely do not understand anything!! I get so frustrated most day and I question my profession ,but I am told by my principal that I am doing a good job.... I dont see it, but he does....

You will get through it... Not very year is gonna be the same! Next year will be completely different.... This is also the time of the year that most kids are DONE! Its Spring and to them school is already over.... unfortunately I have the hormones raging in my class this time of the year.... and that is all that they care about!

Just think summer is almost here, you can relax, and not worry for a few months!

Good luck the rest of the year!

Re: NWR: FIRST YEAR TEACHING

I just graduated and my plan was to substitute teach until september....but i'm starting to have second thoughts as well...teaching is such a tough profession, it's challenging but not in a good way...it seems to be very emotionally challenging...I really have a new found respect for the teachers out there, because i've been having such a hard time...and this isn't even the 'real' thing yet! I've already started applying to other jobs..

Re: NWR: FIRST YEAR TEACHING

I am applying to other jobs right now. I spent 4 years of my life studying to be teacher and I ended up NOT liking it at all. I tried so hard to like it. Its no wonder teachers have the summers off its because we really need it. Its so emotionaly draining and Im not happy with the salary. I had three other friends leave also. I give major credit to all those out there who are teachers.
Give it at least two years.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine. Myself, I am looking to join the New York City Teaching fellows, and I hear horror stories. Keep me updated.
