DH and I are thinking about getting a puppy. We are debating between a few different ones - preferably small to medium size. Just wondering what kind of dogs do you have? How big do they get? How often you have to bring them for a HC & all that good stuff? Also - Where did you get your pup/dog?
Last night we went to puppy boutique in bklyn - omg the teacup yorkies are sooooo precious. 2 lbs. soooo cute

Re: NWR: Girls with dogs / puppies
i just got a maltese about a month ago. hes 1.8 lbs 3 months old..and will be aout 4 lbs full grown..he is a lot of work but once he gets older he will be more enjoyable lol as of right now, he has to go to the vet every week for his shots and im not allowed to take him out for another 5 WEEKS, which sucksss.
great thing about a maltese is that they dont shed!and if u have allergies, this dog is pefect.
If you are looking for a mut/mixed breed dog ie any shitzapoos, shnoodles, shitzacocks etc etc etc I would go to a shelter and rescue a dog or puppy after learning about the personality/health problems associated with the breeds mixed into your dog. If you are looking for a purebred dog I would go to akc.org and look into the breeds you are interested in and visit there breed websites etc. Often these sites have breeders linked to them and will give you information about some of the breed specific health problems and personalities associated with each individual purebred dog and what to look for in a good reputable breeder. I highly discourage pet shop buying as you often have no idea who bred your puppy and it may be wrought with health problems and it also supports the puppy mill industry. Even when they give you a supposed breeder name that breeder is often a puppy mill owner not a true breeder. Iowa/ missouri are the number one puppy mill states and you will notice a lot of the so-called breeders in these areas are actually puppy mills and not reputable people. No decent breeder would ever outsell their puppies to a petstore where they have no idea who purchases them. Most breeders keep track of all of their puppies and want updates etc on the health and well being of their dogs. Other good websites for breed finding purposes include: http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do here you can get info on specific breeds or take a survey that will help you narrow down the breeds you are interested in. Good luck and have fun researching. Any book store also has great books on dog ownership and breeds :)
Thanks, This is the first time im hearing about puppy mill owners/breeders..... what does that mean?
we have a lab mix, we adopted her from north shore animal league. i'm not a fan of puppy stores. they are the reason why dogs in shelters stay in shelters, IMO
obviously she's not a small dog, but she's about 65lbs but on the medium side height wise. she's a great dog her name is sophie

A lot of pet stores get thier pups from puppy mills which are horrible places!!! I'm not against breeding... but it's only good when it's done right. A lot of pet store pups will have a lot of health problems or behavioral issues. Sometimes you get lucky.. but If you really want a pure breed dog i would suggest going through a well known breeder. Check the AKC website... they recommend local breeders for each type of dog by state. Or you can always check places like petfinder.com they list lots of pets in need of adoption and a lot of the time you can get a pure bred pup!!!!!
BTW: I used to have a lhaso apso who i got from a breeder in long island. They only get to be about 10-25 plbs i think.. if that... they are basically the cousin to the shih tzu.. he barley ever shed, was very sweet, and loved to be with us!!! They are good dogs. He passed away 2 years ago
We now have to rescues.. a German shepherd/chow mix who is 93plbs and is the sweetest dog ever and what we think is a basenji/lab or collie mix ( he's nuts..we really don't know wat exactly he is..lol) but he's about 73 lbs now and they are both so sweet.
awww
my parents had a lab/collie (didnt know what he was) we had him for 13.5 yrs but my parents had to put him to sleep about 3 weeks ago
so the puppy mills are basically just places where ppl breed to make $ ????

PLEASE go on the web link i sent you, and LEARN about what a puppymill is.
These dogs are bread over and over in small cages, never let out, their feet on wire their entire lives, their teeth rotten and jaws broken They barely get enough food to survive, and they are use to have puppies to sell in petstores and put lots of money in the puppymill owners pockets.
Please read the website, and all the stories and what they do to help get rid of puppy mills and rescue these dogs and find them forever homes.

Yes, please read the article. The more people who are aware of these horrible places, the greater the chance that we can get them shut down.

If you have Animal Planet with your cable, I recommend watching the Animal Police shows. It's depressing at times, but very informative.

Re: NWR: Girls with dogs / puppies
we have a mini dachshund who is now 2. he is 9lbs, not too tiny, but not too big either. they are great companions, and are great with kids. these dogs really like to play, but also will sit on the couch and snuggle with you for hours. he has such a personality, just like a person. very smart too. everyone loves a hotdog! i would really recommend this breed, esp if you plan on having kids. my brothers mini adores my nieces to death.
We have a pug. When we got her she was not even 4 lbs she is now about 15 and is 4 she wont get any bigger...we love her. They are great dogs and VERY good with kids.
1st as a puppy the next 2 are now
She is so cute!!!
We also have a pug same age and weight and will not get any bigger. We got her at a pet store in Glendale. I would also recommend Bobby and the Strays in Atlas Park if you want to adopt a pet.

Re: NWR: Girls with dogs / puppies
DH and I have two pit bull mixes. They have TONS of energy and require lots of attention. Thank goodness DH likes to run They are both rescue dogs from local shelters.
Please, please please rescue a dog. Thousands of dogs are put down every day because there are not enough homes. Even if you adopt from a no-kill shelter, it frees up room for them to rescue from the high-kill shelters. There are 2 great websites: Petfinder.com and 1800-Save-a-pet.com where you can search by the breed and find a great addition to the family.
Good luck!

I have to agree RESCUE a dog... Leave the Pet Stores ALONE!!! My first dog Justice we got straight from a puppy mil (which after seeing the conditions we got them shut down with the help of the Malinois rescue. When it was tme for a second dog we went back to the mal rescue and adopted our other dog (my avatar pic). The reason I say go to a rescue (or shelter) is if from a rescue they have mostly already lived with a foster family for a few months and they can tell you ALOT of the dogs personality and how they act. It also opens up a foster home for another dog to come out of a kill shelter to a foster home. Also if you are looking for AKC papers on your dog a rescue can sometimes provide them and yes they do have puppies!! Alot of people have to give dogs up due to divorce and moving and come with papers. A shelter is also always good to go to because most of them are KILL shelters but you dont always know alot of the dog you are getting. Either way LEAVE the pet stores behind you!!! They are the reason behind puppy mills & Backyard breeders!!!!

Re: NWR: Girls with dogs / puppies
I have an old man-boxer/pit mix. Don't be fooled by the pit. He is a scaredy pit for sure. He is afraid of the clothing rack, paper bags-you name it-we are always saying to him'scary scary'. My ex husband got him for the pet store he use to manage. He was 4 weeks old when we got him and he will be 12 this year. I inherited him in the divorce. I find it hard to go away on vacation. I have difficuly getting a dog sitter and he is too much a people person that I could not put him in a kennel. I usually pay a fortune to bring him with us. He has a brain tumor also, so I try to spend as much time with him as possible. I don't think I will get another dog for awhile after him. I feel sorry for the Grey Hounds and they are amazing dogs. I may rescue one as my next pet.
