Since FH gets disoriented when walking out of a department store in the mall and is not able to figure out which way to turn to get back to the side we parked on, I decided that for his upcoming bday I'm going to get him a GPS system for the car.
He also said the dreaded words last night regarding the wedding we're going to tonight:
'Don't worry, I have a shortcut'
I'm looking at the under $200 models. After reading some preliminary reviews, it looks like Magellan is slightly better than TomTom.
Can anyone recommend the GPS that they use, and what price range it falls in?
TIA!!!

Re: NWR: GPS Systems
We have a Garmin and it was like 600 something because it had a lot of features.
FH just said Garmin's are really good and you can find one for $200 or less.

I have a Tom Tom and I'm in love! DH got it for me last year. I know it was pretty expensive but he got what was the newest model at the time. I think they have a couple that are under 200 bucks but I'm not really sure of the price range. It's such a great gift, especially for people like me who get lost going straight down the block. Sounds like he's the same way!

we have a Tom Tom, though we rarely use it. It is a basic model and does the job.

FH has a garmin nuvi. We love it. We've traveled everywhere with it. You can definitely get one for under $200 - check out amazon.

I HATE TOM TOM with a passion. I have a Garmin Nuvi and I love it. FH has a Tom Tom and it gets us lost all the time. It actually took us up a hill to a dead end in Staten Island and repeatedly told us to make a left. Make a left where, into the house. It got FH lost so bad he had to call me and I had to find him on a map and talk him through getting home.

Re: NWR: GPS Systems
I just bought one for my sister for her birthday and it is a Garmin. It was kinda pricey....more than $200 but that's because there were certain things I wanted it to have. Make sure the one you buy has everything you want it to have. The one I bought for my sister has the following:
-Touch Screen -Text to Speek -Blue Tooth Enabled -When it tells you when and where to turn it tells you street names instead of saying turn right 100 feet -Traffic and Weather Updates
A lot more that I can't think of right now.

Re: NWR: GPS Systems
You DEFINITELY need a model that has the 'text-to-speech' feature--not all GPS models announce the directions. You'll pay a little bit more, but it's a MUST HAVE feature.

Re: NWR: GPS Systems
I'd definitely want text to speak and touch screen...can do without traffic/weather and bluetooth,so I'm hoping that keeps the price reasonable. We don't do major road trips, yet, but once we're married we'd like to be able to pick up and go for a weekend every now and then, so this will help considerably (plus, FH still gets lost in St. James, 5 years later )

I even find myself using it for when I get stuck in traffic on my way home from work--it updates the ETA for you as you drive, so I can call DH and let him know how much longer it's going to be because the Garmin is telling me!!!

Re: NWR: GPS Systems
Go with the TOM TOM! FMIL bought FH a really expensive Magellin for x-mas (I had bought him the Tom Tom) and since hers would have to be mailed back and such and mine only had to be returned to Target, we decided that he should keep hers and return the one she got him. I apologize in advance FMIL, but the gps she got him S*CKS!!!!! We have never used it an NOT gotten lost! I'm pretty good with getting to and from places but FH is just like your FH and god forbid he has to find an alternate route home from work, he has no idea what to do, this gps always ends up making matters worse! Our DJ is from Long Island City and I'm familiar with the area but didn't know how to exactly get to the address, we were in his car unfortunately (my car has the factory gps system which is awesome) and the stupid thing got me lost for over an hours. The Tom Tom is much more user friendly.

Re: NWR: GPS Systems
We have a TomTom and it does pretty well. However, like someone else said, once it took us down a dead end and told us to keep going.... into the woods??
But you are supposed to plug it into your computer and upgrade the info once in a while, which we have not done since we got it. So I have a feeling that is the issue.
Otherwise it's definitely saved our life a few times !

Re: NWR: GPS Systems
Most important:
Make sure the unit comes with the map's already in it. Some will be less expensive and you have ti update the map with an initial download.
