HELP! FH is a licensed counselor and can't find a job anywhere! It's super challenging getting a job in the DOE right now. Does anyone know of any agencies that contract guidance counselors out to schools? Something, anything related to guidance? I'm so frustrated for him already!

Re: GUIDANCE COUNSELORS?? ANYONE
I'm a guidance counselor. You are right, it is horribly hard to get a job. I'm assuming he keeps tabs on OLAS?
I would say to look into local agencies that work within schools to get your foot in the door. I don't know where you are located but I know agencies like Sanctuary may be a good place to start... the one in Huntington sends its employees out into their communities to run groups for kids and also offer counseling. It's a good way to get your foot in the door at a school and get your face recognized. Also maybe try colleges for admissions and financial aid work, I do that too. Try St. Joe's, LIU and Suffolk....they are all amazing places to work and at least get him experience that would look good on a resume.
Good luck!

THANKS! He sent out maybe 100 resumes on OLAS? And not a thing! I'll definitely tell him about those agencies though! Thank you =)

I would recommend subbing or taking a leave first, better than nothing

that's how I did it. I was a sub as a teacher to get my face recognized and then I got a leave replacement for a year.

He he licensed only as a school counselor by NYS? If not, why not look into private, corporate or hospitals?

I am also a school counselor. Got my start in a CBO that has after-school programs in schools.

try YAI
www.yai.org
Young Adult Institute. They primarily work in group homes, but have been noted as being one ofnthe best companies to work for. I applied to work in a group home in Queens (think they have one in Nassau as well) made it to the group interview, but did not get past that phase. It may not be exactly what he's looking for, but he would gain valuable experience, and may want to grow with them.

I am guidance counselor also. I moved out of NY so I could get a job. I first started as a teaching assistant/aide and then they wanted me to do a leave replacement the following year. The school clearly knew what my background was in. Three years later, I have been a guidance counselor in a middle school. The key piece is getting your foot in the door.
