NWR: Have any of you thought/ seriuosly contemplated moving out of NY?

Original post by Mrs Z To Be

Last week, FH & I visited my sis and BIL in Charlotte, North Carolina...This was our third time visinig, and this time, it really sunk in how nice it is there..

AND the cost of living is SO much more affordable than here,

LOTS of thinking going on here lately.....

My fiance is originally from Chicago.. and he's def sick and tired of living in NY. I made a promise to him that after my 1st baby is born and is about 2yrs old.. we will start looking for a place to move. Not sure if it will be Chicago (since I HATE THE COLD).. but def somewhere other then NY/NJ area.

i'm stuck in NY until FH retires from the FDNY, he's sick of driving to BK and I'm sick of sitting in traffic...i guess i'll have to wait.

Exactly. My FH is NYPD, so we're here for the long run.

Mine is NYPD too, we have no plans to leave

Ok here is my two cents....as many of you know Dh and I bought a house in CT a year ago (well a year in 5 days lol) This was a huge huge huge sacrifice on my end. We were both born and raised on Long Island and our entire family lives on LI. But DH got a job in CT b/c he wanted to move off LI. After months of adjusting, I can honestly tell you it was the best decision of our lives. We live in a great town, along the shoreline, great schools, etc. My taxes are $3k...seriously so cheap. Houses are comparable to LI, but its the taxes and utlities that save you so much money. The way of life and personalities of people are just so much different. This is truly a wonderful place to raise a family. And I know the most important part to people are salaries, well I make about $5k more then I did when I was working in NYC, so the salaries are up there. The good thing is everyone works in either Stamford, New Haven or Hartford. Each of these big cities have huge companies, therefore paying very well. The best part is I'm just a ferry ride away or a 2 hour drive. So not too bad.

Its definitely an adjustment girls but so worth it in the end.

FH has seriously looked at property in Australia & Canada.

we also regularly look at property Upstate, NY. we have considered purchasing some land as far as 8 hours away from NYC. my only concern is that I don't know how to raise kids outside of the city.

we will most likely end up owning our dream home some place upstate, NY & only having an apartment near the city.

I would never live in LI again--it's too expensive! DH and I live in Ohio (we went to grad school here), which isn't good at all, but at least we're able to save some money. We are moving to the Philadelphia area this summer because he just got a new professor position. We are excited to be in a location close to three major cities (NY, Philly, DC), but I am still hoping to move close to the water one day. Maybe NC will be in the picture one day! :)

i lived outside of NY once and I really never want to leave again. Fh on the other hand wants to move to the midwest since our values are more in step then they are here in the NE. i mean there really wouldnt be anything to stop us but I just cant leave LI.

I was born and raised on LI. I graduated highschool and decided to 'escape' and moved to FL...its warm, sunny, the beach is right there....thought it would be a great move. I've come to the realization that making your vacation spot your home isn't always the best idea. I didn't realize all of the downfalls of FL until I moved. Yeah its warm, sunny...but I can't tell you the last time I saw the beach and I live 15min away. I would move back to NY in a HEARTBEAT, but I am stuck here since FH's job is here.

We've talked about moving to Indian Trail NC. its about 30-45min outside Charlotte.. in Matthews. 90% of the people who live in Indian Train are from NY. one of my BFFs live there, thats how we found out about it, we went to their wedding down there then again July of 08 (when FH proposed) the only thing keeping us here is his nephews and nieces.

umm.. YEAH!

I could get SOOO MANY more jobs in Jersey and Boston. FH would have no problem picking up and moving but i'm a little more hesitant.

I don't think I could. Not for no reason anyway. If an opportunity came up, I'd consider it. But most of our family is here. I know FH wouldn't want to leave either.

I would move yesterday! I hate being in NYC - noise, traffic, people! Just want something quieter.

It's not too far from the city. It takes us like 30 mins to get back to our apt in Queens from there (with no traffic of course!!!)

Lincoln Park.

After hearing that, I am really ok with the move to NJ. Do you live close to there?

there are a few lincoln parks in jersey lol..but i'm going to assume its the one in middlesex (by airport) since its the one that's most north... that's a great deal!!!!
we live in hudson county, right outside the lincoln tunnel.

I live in Secaucus not too far from you. We are staying in NJ no moving to LI I would love to move to Bergen County but its very expensive. DH wants to move back to the Cherry Hill area in South Jersey were he is from so we will probably move to Central NJ I still want to work in the city. Cannot afford to buy a house in the NYC area

Yes, we definitely have! I love NYC, but you get so much more for your money in terms of housing in other states.

At 1 point we were thinking of Florida- but since my whole family is here we decided to stay in Queens and then move to LI when we retire. Thats the furthest I want to be from my family
