So my health insurance is horrific. I pay a lot for nothing and my co-pays are high...
So FH has a decent plan and they say we need legal documentation of domestic partnership for me to get put on it. Can someone tell me what that might be? He cant find any info on it and his HR dept is totally useless as always.

House papers, bills that have the same address, bank accounts...that's what i would assume

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
I think we just need a copy of our lease that showed we were living together...and they asked for our license too. I did the same thing as you because my insurance was not as good as FH's.

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
we looked into adding me as a domestic partner when i got laid off so i wouldn't have to pay cobra, but it didn't work. even though we had a joint bank acct and stuff like that, we needed to show proof for a year. we decided it would be much easier to just wait it out the few more months...

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
as far as i know, each company has different standards to apply for domestic partnership... FH's wanted proof we were living together for 6 months (basically an ID that showed we had the same address) and a joint bank acct.... some companies are a bit more strict and ask for more things and each thing is given a certain amt of weight ... its weird...

my sister did this before she got married too.. she had to show proof that you have been living together for at least a year, like both names on a lease or mortgage, joint bank accounts and have power of attorney for one another. last i checked you couldn't do that any more. Definitely interested it it!

some companies dont do the domestic partnership thing at all... it all depends on who you or your FH work for...

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
FH and I just had to fill out an affidavit stating that we lived together for more than a year in order to prove we were domestic partners. My office and my health plan didn't even ask to see our lease or anything else. My work health plan is fabulous, and FH had a bare bones plan, so we put FH on mine after we had lived together for exactly one year (domestic partners according to my plan). We even filled out the paperwork in advance, so the plan became effective at the one year mark.

Usually they like to see the drivers license, bank accounts and at least one bill. Good luck..

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
It really depends on his company.....I have been on FH's insurance for about a year now. His company didnt need to see anything. But they said we'll ask you for your lease if we need it. The length of co-habitation depends on his company...some are a year some are only 6 mons

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
I asked my company about this since we've been living together 2 years and I have way better insurance and they said it had to be 'same sex' for me to add him. I'm so annoyed if they told me the wrong thing.

here's another thing to look into. FH and I were going to do it but his company said since I was Interdependent of him (I have my own insurance) they would not charge him extra but it would be added into his income and he would be taxed on it. We left it the way it was until we're married then there is no problems.
They try and do little things to make it more difficult.

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
Some companies will not let you do that very easily b/c it costs them money. You might as well just wait until you're married. Then you just need a marriage license.

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
Hi!! My FH has been insured under my health insurance (through my past 3 jobs actually) as my domestic partner (he's self employed and would have to cover his own insurance & can't get dental) so I have a LOT of experience with this. First a couple of items you need to know. Different companies have different bi-laws about what they require as proof or who they'll cover. So your FH first needs to find out what his company's requirements are. Second, his insurance company can have their own bi-laws as well so he needs to ask HR about that too. On the bright side, they're usually all the same bi-laws. Here's what we've done and we've always been approved: 1. Open a joint bank account. It's super easy to do and takes 30mins at any bank. 2. Open up a joint credit card. Even if your credit is bad and it's only a $250 secured credit card - OPEN IT! It'll show a financial tie between the two of you. If you can't get this, get some sort of bill with both of your names on it, like a cell phone or utility bill. I find credit cards to be the best though. 3. You'll need either a lease or mortgage in both your names that shows you share a residence (along w/sharing responsibility for that residence). If you live in an apt w/no lease get your landlord to write a letter (preferrably notarized) saying that you both live together at his residence and both legally responsible for the apartment. 4. Lastly, his company/insurance company will give you a letter to have signed and notarized by you both stating your intent to live together and stay together indefinitely, and saying you'll inform them if you end your relationship. Please feel free to FM me if you have any further questions!!!!

This is true btw!! If you go on your FH health insurance legally, the company paying for your health insurance is considered additional income to your FH and he'll be taxed on the amount that the company pays on your behalf. So let's say the company pays $400/month to the insurance company to cover you, that addt'l $400/month will be considered additional income and your FH will see additional taxes taken out each month (equal to whatever the taxes on $400 worth of income would be). My FH used to just reimburse me the difference so I wouldn't have to eat the cost. If your FH has great insurance it might be worth it to you. It would probably under $100 a month so I would do it.

Re: NWR- Health insurance before youre married
My company requires that you sign a legal affadavit (sp?) declaring that you live together.
