NWR - Home Buying

Original post by RoandJoe

Lately, FH and I have been on a home buying kick. We both know we really can't afford it right now, but are looking either way.
If you don't already have a home, what is your plan for purchasing one? Are you waiting until a few months before the wedding?
FH and I don't want to rent and pay our landlord's mortgage. We see it as such a waste of money to pay someone up to 1200+ per month that we could be saving for a house. We've had a weird misconception that the down payment for a home was way cheaper than what it really is. We're going to try and stick it out a bit longer in our separate homes...but after getting a boat load of stuff off of our registry we can't help but get excited to live together!

OY! This is such a source of contention for FH and me. I want to buy a house pretty much right after we get married. I want to own a house/condo big enough to start a family, and do it before we start one. He says we should save as much as we can, and then buy 'when we're ready' (which, to me, translates to never).

We both have decent credit, his being better than mine. The problem is, I'm willing to buy a fixer upper, and do the work to make a house what we want it to be little by little. He wants to buy something move in ready. He just doesn't understand that it costs too much to do that.

We also constantly disagree on where to live. We're both from Queens, but I'm from Little Neck (which most people consider basically Long Island), and he's from Bayside, which is a little more populated. I would love to move to Long Island, but realize we will probably never be able to afford the property taxes. So I suggested we look in Jersey (even though the thought of having to drive on Jersey streets makes me nauseous), and he said he doesn't want to move far away from his family (aka his mom). I want to stay close to my family too, but I'd like to be able to afford to have a child and own a house, and don't see that happening in Queens or Nassau.

Luckily, we still have time to discuss it, and anything is possible!!

(Oh, also, I really want to be on that TV show Property Brothers, because they could find us a dirt cheap house and fix it up. Unfortunately, they only tape in Canada and Texas. LOL)

I am obsessed with Property Brothers!!! I would go on it in a heartbeat if they came to New York!!

Have any of you ladies thought about moving out of NY?

FH and I are actually planning on moving out of NY ASAP. We can't justify the cost of living. I have the same reservations about leaving my family which is why I told him I'd only move on the east coast, preferably no further south than NC.

Since we still live separately, we're trying to put off renting as long as possible b/c we're also trying to bank the rent money we would have been spending as downpayment money. Since we want to leave NY and we're both not settled in our careers yet, we'll probably have to look for apartments to rent this summer and hopefully only rent a year or two. We'll both start looking for out of state jobs and hopefully be in a position to buy shortly after the wedding. That's the plan as of right now, but life is funny!

Fh and I live with my parent so that we can save money for the house and the wedding. We are also in the process of improving our credit to get a better the best rate we can. We have been taking first time home buyer classes through a state runned program which was a real eye opener for us. We learned a lot. We also we so close to making a very big financial mistake lol. We have talked about moving off the island but we really don't want to move away from friends and family.

We will hopefully have enough a year after the wedding so we just got to stick it out 2.5 more years with my parents if by then we do not have enough to buy a house here we will leave LI to buy a house. We want to start having a family pretty soon after getting married so it needs to all happen pretty fast after we are married.

FH and I love together in an apartment. We live in NYC so it would be virtually impossible to pay for rent by myself without having any spending money leftover! We will be moving back to Long Island a few years after getting married but before children. Probably somewhere in Nassau with a good commute into Manhattan. The down payment sure is daunting, though!

Same with us! I need to live close to Manhattan and I dread the thought of the LIRR so we'll be renting until we're ready to make a down payment on a house. Plus I'm so used to calling a super when there's a broken door knob, or a clogged drain... I don't think FH and I are ready to fix things on our own in a house. We're not that handy!

YES! A super sure is handy! Where in NYC do you live now? Are there specific towns you will be targeting on LI?

We live in Downtown Brooklyn, right by the bridge. When we do eventually buy a home, I was thinking about something close to the train like Mineola or Hicksville. What about you?
