NWR - Home Buying

Lately, FH and I have been on a home buying kick. We both know we really can't afford it right now, but are looking either way.
If you don't already have a home, what is your plan for purchasing one? Are you waiting until a few months before the wedding?
FH and I don't want to rent and pay our landlord's mortgage. We see it as such a waste of money to pay someone up to 1200+ per month that we could be saving for a house. We've had a weird misconception that the down payment for a home was way cheaper than what it really is. We're going to try and stick it out a bit longer in our separate homes...but after getting a boat load of stuff off of our registry we can't help but get excited to live together!

NWR - Home Buying

FH and I recently started looking at houses as well. Luckily, my in laws have a house that we can rent if we can't find a house anytime soon but we would rather try to find a house right away so we don't have to spend money on rent. But it's been hard. I feel like FH and I can't agree on what we want. What he wants, I don't want and vice versa.

We cant afford anything big either but it really doesn't hurt to look. Ive never been house hunting before so every house I see is a learning experience. FH is an insurance agent so he knows what to look out for in houses in terms of water damage, etc so that's definitely helpful.

We will probably end up living in the rental for about a year or so after we get married to save up money. Sigh. Only if money grew on trees...

NWR - Home Buying

FH & I live together in an apartment and we will probably start looking after we get married. Where we live the houses are reasonably priced and are under the impression we can have a mortgage that is equal to what we pay in rent or less. We will casually start looking right away but our lease isn't up until the October following our marriage so we would have some time.

NWR - Home Buying

FH and I always are looking but I honestly don't know if we could swing a house and a wedding at the same time. On top of that, I dont really want the stress of buying a house and planning a wedding at the same time. FH and I will get an appt a few months before the wedding. As much as I wish we were living together now, we are saving a lot by living apart.

NWR - Home Buying

FH and I went out a few weeks ago to check out some houses we found on mlsli.com. Basically, the only way we would possibly buy anything this year is if we could get the mortgage payments down to close to what we currently pay in rent. While this IS possible with the situation we have, it's not very likely, so we'll probably end up renewing our lease for one more year, which would take us right up to the date of our wedding. We would LOVE to get married and then just move right into a house when we get back from the honeymoon.

NWR - Home Buying

FH & I always talk about buying a house, which will most likely happen at least 1 year after the wedding to save some money for a down payment without feeling a burden. We will probably look into LI or upstate because we want a backyard for BBQ's and football games my FH plans on playing w his brothers & friends LOL. We rent now and we are happy but the good thing is we are on the same page in wanting to leave Queens and move to the suburbs which I'm excited for when the time comes :) It's very exciting to think about it!

NWR - Home Buying

Fh and I are kinda buying a house and kinda inheriting one. His grandmother passed away in September and left Tue house to ffil and his brother. That is the house they grew up in so they didn't want to sell it to strangers. So ffil is giving us his half and we have to get a mortgage to buy out his brother. I have no clue when we will be moving in because fhs grandparents were hoarders and the house is still being cleaned out. But hopefully we will be in by this summer. It is very stressful though to think about paying a mortgage and for a wedding.

NWR - Home Buying

FH and I love together in an apartment. We live in NYC so it would be virtually impossible to pay for rent by myself without having any spending money leftover! We will be moving back to Long Island a few years after getting married but before children. Probably somewhere in Nassau with a good commute into Manhattan. The down payment sure is daunting, though!

NWR - Home Buying

FH and I can't afford a wedding and a house at the same time. Right now we have a decent arrangement where we live in his parents basement so that allows us to save up for the wedding AND a house.

FH wants to build me a house. His dad built his mom a house... they built the house upstate... so he wants to build me a house.

Our plan is to stick it out in the basement until about 1.5-2 years after the wedding (before we have kids because I REFUSE to bring a baby home to a basement apartment) and buy a trailer and house thats foreclosed on. That way... we can live in the trailer on the land... we can knock down the house and build up with the basement and the foundation already there.

NWR - Home Buying

We already own an home and are actually in the process of buying our 2nd home. FMIL is retiring to Florida and is selling us her house at a price we couldn't refuse. We should close a couple of days before the wedding. We plan on renting out our original house and hopefully it will become a nice retirement fund for us.

It probably wasn't the best idea to plan the wedding and buy a house all at the same time - buying a house is such a headache with all the paperwork etc. I will say though that interest rates are at an all-time low right now and will never be this low again.

If there is a problem with coming up with the down payment, you could always take out an FHA loan which require 3.5% down. You will also be responsible for closing costs but you could roll that into your mortgage if need be.

Same with us! I need to live close to Manhattan and I dread the thought of the LIRR so we'll be renting until we're ready to make a down payment on a house. Plus I'm so used to calling a super when there's a broken door knob, or a clogged drain... I don't think FH and I are ready to fix things on our own in a house. We're not that handy!

YES! A super sure is handy! Where in NYC do you live now? Are there specific towns you will be targeting on LI?

Thanks! I think so too! Also I should add that the house he wants to build is completely 'Green'. Its going to be built out of shipping containers, recycled materials and all solar powered and everything :)

It has crossed my mind. The only thing that holds me back is being away from family. FH would move if I said lets go. I just don't think I could be away from our families.

I considered it for one second, then realized I can't leave my family behind. Every time my family moved, everyone moved with them. We all live within 10 blocks of each other (literally!). It would be so much easier financially though

I've also thought about out of state.. but I want my kids to have grandparents. I didn't grow up with grandparents so I'm going to make damn sure that my kids will have weekends with their grandparents and holidays with them :)
