Story: My FH and i went to Mohegan Sun for the night with another couple. We ended up sharing the room with them since they were all booked up. The next morning, my FH took out his wallet and threw down a $5 dollar bill on the counter. Our friend M was like... 'whats that for?' My FH told him that it was for the housekeeper. Now M said that he's never tipped the housekeeper EVER and that he's never seen anyone do this before. His girlfriend proceeded to say that she's never left a tip either, except when she's been out of the country.
So my thoughts are... what does it matter if you're out of the country or not? If you're willing to tip the housekeeper in Spain, why not here in the US?
So it got me thinking... do you ladies tip the housekeeper when you stay in a hotel? Is this another one of those region to region things (every state is different)?

I tip, always have, one night, a week, whatever - I always leave something. It's how I was taught - and it's not a NY thing, because I'm from the midwest. If anything, your friends seem to have it backward to me because tipping is not customary in many other parts of the world.

whether i'm local or international--one night of 2 wks....whenever i've stayed in hotel i've always tipped. perhaps it's because i was a waitress for awhile, and i know what it's like to work for tips. more often than not, the maids for hotels do not get paid that much, because they are considered tipped employees.

Now i'm just curious... but why do you tip for the honeymoon and not for a night?
Do you tip at the end of the honeymoon or did you tip each day? (Because what if the same person isn't cleaning your room each day/week)
I'm just totally baffled here because i thought this was a universal thing that everyone did. Apparently i was wrong.
whenever i've stayed at a hotel for a few days, they've usually had a little card of sign that says 'Hi, My name is so-and-so and I will be taking care of your room during your stay. If you need anything--feel free to leave a note.' And this was usually next to an envelope. So at the end of the stay I would leave something like $20 or so depending on the service.
For example--FH and i went to cancun last may, and had such a card in our room. Everyday it was spotless, with fresh towels, soap, etc. She even made sure to make these cute swans out of the towels with fresh flowers. The mini-fridge was stocked with diet soda, regular soda, juice, and water, etc. I left a note that for the remainder of my stay after day 1, that I wanted only regular soda (as neither one of us like diet, and i didn't want to waste it), and she happily obliged! So I think we left her like $25-30 or so for a 5 day stay.

I'm not against tipping, I just never have. I never thought about it. But after reading this post, I will be sure to do so from now on.

Always.
Especially on cruises. We tip our room guy $50 the first time we see them and get great service the whole time! (& they dont snitch when we have our own liquor in the room)
