Story: My FH and i went to Mohegan Sun for the night with another couple. We ended up sharing the room with them since they were all booked up. The next morning, my FH took out his wallet and threw down a $5 dollar bill on the counter. Our friend M was like... 'whats that for?' My FH told him that it was for the housekeeper. Now M said that he's never tipped the housekeeper EVER and that he's never seen anyone do this before. His girlfriend proceeded to say that she's never left a tip either, except when she's been out of the country.
So my thoughts are... what does it matter if you're out of the country or not? If you're willing to tip the housekeeper in Spain, why not here in the US?
So it got me thinking... do you ladies tip the housekeeper when you stay in a hotel? Is this another one of those region to region things (every state is different)?

We always tip...even if a few dollars, whether local or abroad.

I always leave something for the housekeeper regardless of where it is or how many nights. IMO we tip everyone else at hotels, and the housekeepers deserve it most (if they do a good job)

Now i'm just curious... but why do you tip for the honeymoon and not for a night?
Do you tip at the end of the honeymoon or did you tip each day? (Because what if the same person isn't cleaning your room each day/week)
I'm just totally baffled here because i thought this was a universal thing that everyone did. Apparently i was wrong.

I never used to because I didn't know people did that. FI has since informed me that I should leave at least a dollar a night per person when I stay at a hotel, so now I do.

Honestly, I never heard of this until a few years ago when a group of my girl friends and I stayed at a really nice hotel in Boston and one of them left a tip.
So, now I try to leave a few bucks if I can.

Re: NWR: Hotel Tipping...w/poll
see... ever since i was little, we were always taught to leave a tip, no matter how many nights you stayed. And for us, the general rule was that you left $5 dollars per day as a tip.
The one thing my mother always said was that being a housekeeper was the one job she would never want to do (and i should mention that she did clean houses for a little while). I mean who wants to clean up after people all day long (and some people are definitely dirtier than others) So we were taught to tip them first because its the last job that we would most likely want to do. I mean i know that i wouldn't want to clean up after strangers if i didn't have to. So we always tip them!

for all stays, regardless of length of stay, we were taught to always leave a tip (even if it's just a few bucks) for the housekeeper before we checked out.

I do, even for one night, IF the room is clean. If its not clean, we don't tip. (The only places we've had problems with are econo lodges, so we are avoiding them now...)

Re: NWR: Hotel Tipping...w/poll
I always thought it was standard protocol, so I've always left a tip, not a huge one, but something. Assuming they did a good job.
ETA: We in New York tend to tip and tip more than in other places in the country. So I'm not sure what the standard is in other places.

Same here. If I stay more than one night, I leave something.

Okay but whats the difference between staying one night or a few nights? They're still doing the same job aren't they?
*I'm just curious now that this whole thing happened at mohegan. And when i'm curious... i play devils advocate and try to look at it from every angle.

I tipped for the HM or any long trip b/c we were there for 10 days- she had to clean around our mess etc- I tipped in the begining and at the end
if I stay at a holiday inn for 1 night in NY- I don't normally tip b/c I check out in the morning so they never have to clean around my stuff-
