I've been working the last 5 years in corporate accounting. The last 4 have been spent at my current company.
I just don't love my job. I've started to look for a new job; but now I feel with the wedding; and possibility of starting a family soon maybe i should stay put?
I just don't LOVE what i'm doing. And i'm starting to think i should leave now before i have a family so that i'm already settled into a new job by the time we're having kids.
also-i know with the economy finding a new job won't be easy. I already went on 3 interviews where they picked other candidates so it's not like i'll have a new job next week.
My older family members say stay put so you can gain seniority. But i feel like now a days seniority & longevity doesn't matter as much. I can be on the job 12 years and they can let me go if they need to.
I just feel like now a days; people don't stay at a job for 10+ years. I'll be there 5 years next January. I think it's time to move on...

i know exactly how you feel! I have been at my job for 6 years and have the same thoughts of leaving. Part of me wants to leave to try something new (same field but new surroundings) and also bc i feel that is the best way to make more money (my job gives the standard 3% raise each year). But on the flip side I know i am fortunate to have a job, especially in this economy. So for now i weighed all options and I am staying here....i need the job security and benefits (4 weeks vaca) and of course the income. i am also not in a high stress job and have the luxury to take time off come in late/leave early when necessary and with the thoughts of having a family soon that is a HUGE benefit (esp since FH has a strict job where he needs to go to work from 7-5:30 and cant take off much). I would still look and keep your options open...cant hurt to interview. If you get a job offer then sit down and consider it all.
Thanks!
I've been on my job 4 years and STILL only get 2 weeks vacation! Won't get an extra week until next year! And that stays until i hit like 15 years. My job doesn't have great benefits. Poor vacation time; terrible work life balance; if i do need to take a day off; it's totally based around work schedules and i can hardly call out sick. Oh and i feel like when i go to the doctors or get prescriptions i'm paying SO much out of pocket so my health benefits aren't anyting brag about! So that's definetely one of the reasons i'm looking...more $$ more time off; better benefits! I'd go back to school if i got a job that could help me pay for it!

Re: NWR: How long have you been at your job?
I've been at my job FT for almost 4 years. I started working for this company as a part timer 9.5 years ago.
It's difficult. Last year I was really thinking of leaving to find a different job, but it's hard. I have decent benefits here. A pension and a 401K, In another year, I'll get a 4th week of vacation. I'm one of the most senior people in my position in the entire country, but as other people said it doens't necessarily mean anything.
This past year we had a shakeup at my job, a total restructure, a few of them actually and people who had been here 8 or 9 years were pushed out. Over the years I've survived I think4 rounds of layoffs. I was like 'get me out of here' but then my job structure changed and there are 2 competing forces
1) It's more 'flat', so I don't have many prospects for promotion/more money
BUT
2) I now get to work from home 90% of the time, my boss is in charge of a lot more so he's busier and micromanages less, and my team is pretty high profile so we are piloting new things, etc etc.
So it's tough.
It's also a total shift. You can read articles about it. In our parnets generation you stayed at your job for the long haul and they respected long term employees and rewarded it. Today's economy is so different. people stay at jobs for less time, and the only way to get more money or a higher position is often to change. Companies and employees don't have that same level of mutual trust and investment.

Re: NWR: How long have you been at your job?
I have been at my job for almost 3 years. its one of those places nobody loves but it is just so casual no one can bring them selves to leave. after the wedding i would actually love to start trying to be a wedding planner. i have been planing my wedding for years but in the last year i have been doing it like its my job . So i would really love to get into it full time .
