NWR: I'm sorry ladies - can I ask some questions about NYC/Penn Station
I'm really nervous about going into the city by myself...
I was going to subway it to Chelsea but I think I may take a taxi since I'll be by myself. Does anyone know how long the ride is (from Penn)?
And the 6:33 train Penn to LI, is it really crowded? Do I have to get there early or something?
I'm sorry girls - thanks!

Subway will be faster!! And for your return commute 6:33 from Penn to LI you should be in Penn by 6:15 as they call teh train 10 mintues prior and you'll want to get a seat...You have no worries, alot of us on here do it everyday :)

First, you're completely safe. And, if you taxi it, it's a little bit of a ride, but, it depends on traffic.
And, the 6:33 from Penn will probably be really crowded, I would guess, but, it will probably clear out a bit once you hit Jamaica.

Yes, I'm not nervous about going in, I'm taking a 3:55 train into NYC - it prob won't be crowded...
I'm nervous about going on a subway to Chelsea so I'm gonna cab it (there and back), so I was wondering how long you think it is?
On the way home, I'll be taking probably the 6:33 train and it's still peak so I was wondering if it was really crowded...
Thanks!
My other option is car service but I don't know about traffic in NYC at rush hour..

I take the subway everyday. Around the time when you come in it shouldnt be bad. From 5-6 it is really crowded. Totally safe so no worries.

You would most likely be getting off at either 23rd or 14th street to go to Chelsea. 23rd street is real quick - just one stop. 14th street is two stops.
IMPORTANT: If you need to get off at 23rd Street - DO NOT TAKE THE A TRAIN!!!!!!! It is blue just like the C and the E, but it is express and goes straight to 14th!!!

I think it really depends on where you are going in Chelsea. I used to work on 25th between 5+6 an walked every day. It only took about 10 minutes and i'm really slow. If its raining take the subway instead of a taxi.
Penn station is usually a zoo around 6:30 since everyone is off of work and coming back to the island.

You can get directions anywhere in the city here...
www.hopstop.com
And, the directions you mentioned earlier about the 1 train would work - so would taking the C/E to 23rd and walking 3 blocks up and then making a right on 26.

If you are that nervous I would just walk since its only 7 blocks. Save the money.
Take the escalator by the bathroom upstairs. Stay to the left to the exit for Penn. Take those elevators and go right to walk 'down' streets. Stay on the side of Penn since you'll already be on 7th.
Good luck!!!

Oh Jen - I was reading your post saying walk, OK, she has no idea what she's talking about.
I'd rather walk - you ROCK! And thanks for the detailed directions!
