nwr: is this normal?

nwr: is this normal?

Hi ladies. Quick question.

I have a job interview tomorrow. I've already had a phone interview with them, and they've called me in for an in-person interview. I was talking to the woman and she mentioned that part of the interview would include some paperwork, so I asked her what it was, if I needed to prepare anything. She said that I would be filling out an I-9 and a W-4. If I'm correct, those are tax forms... have you ever heard of filling out tax forms at an interview before? Is this normal? I would have thought you only do that if they've given you the job...

Should I be reading something into this, or is it just a normal procedure? I really don't want to get my hopes up to have them be crushed because I REALLY want this job.

thanks ladies - and wish me luck for tomorrow!

I've never heard of filling out tax forms prior to accepting a job offer. Hopefully the fact that they're mentioning it to you is a good sign!!

Best of luck tomorrow...

I think those are forms you fill out after you accept the position and are hired. Unless they plan on making you an offer and assume you will accept it? Sounds weird though.

see that's what seems so wierd about it... I mean, you don't need tax forms unless you're being paid... you don't get paid unless you get the job... but would they really assume that I will be accepting the job? I mean, if it was offered I would accept, but the point is that people generally go for as many interviews as possible, so hirers probably wouldn't assume somebody would say yes, you know?

Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! I'm driving myself nuts over this. It's probably nothing, it's probably just their policy... maybe so they can use the info to do a background check on me? Would that be legal though?

oy. I really want this job. I'm going to be pretty upset if I don't get it.

To answer your question, no it is not normal.
I would be careful about giving away your social security number and other personal info without an signed offer letter.

Those forms are filled out after an offer is extended and accepted.

What kind of job is it?

Re: nwr: is this normal?

It's a teaching job at a private school. I'm not too worried about giving them my info as they actually already have it because I worked at one of their summer programs. It does strike me as quite odd though, I can see no reason why they would ask for it. My FH asked his mom (who does some hiring and such) and all she could say was 'well, it's not a normal school' (since it's a private school).

Oy. I'm so confused! I probably should just wait and see, but I can't stop thinking about it.

Technically they can't ask you to fill out this information before you accept the position b/c for your I-9 form some of the documents could potentially have your date of birth on them.. They can't ask you your age before they offer your the job.. b/c of potential age discrimination.

As your said earlier you don't need a W4 b/c all that is, is telling the employer the withholdings your chose for your paycheck.

I would ask a little bit about that before you fill anything out.

Bah, this is so confusing! And complicated...

I will certainly make sure I know what's going on before I fill them out. As I said above I'm not too concerned with them having my info... I have worked at one of their summer programs for the last 5 years, so they have all of my information and know all of those things like my age already anyway. It never even occured to me that places couldn't ask my age... I guess I have a lot to learn!

gah, I just want to know what's going on!

Re: nwr: is this normal?

Sometimes they will ask for a w-4 for salary negotiations. I.e. You said you currently make $$$, before they offer to match it or beat it they want proof. Or maybe they just like all their interviewees to bring this stuff just in case they make an offer? Maybe make the hiring process more streamlined? Good luck!
