NWR: Life Altering Career Change, pls help!!

NWR: Life Altering Career Change, pls help!!

FULL OPTION DESCRIPTIONS BELOW...
1) Keep the draining, but safe, M-F, 9-5 job as a Tech Support Rep at a Biotech manufacturing company.
2) Take a risk by starting my own business, selling jewelry and 'taking care of the home (& dog).' All at my own pace.

***Here's the catch: FH and I decided on option 2 literally last night. TODAY, my company offered me a new role (no extra$ yet, maybe in future). It would be a major responsibility and I'd be traveling A LOT for about 2 months, but it would pay off in the end, eventually. I need to let them know if I commit to it by Wednesday. Another thing to consider is that FH and I are probably going to move to Brooklyn soon and the only way I'd keep the current job and drive there every day is if I had a leading role (which is closer now than it was a day ago).
Opinions please!??

i would stay where you are until you're more financially stable to take greater risks

but you should also try to negotiate for more money - maybe if they knew you were going to leave they'd be willing to throw you a bone

Haha yeah, that is a good point about maybe asking for something more.... But the stability thing is fine, luckily FH makes good $. Still a tough decision. Either one is a huge step. Thanks for the support!

I just had to make that same decision. My FH has allowed me to work from home and freelance.

He has very old school values and likes a traditional wife... but the best thing about it is, any second I change my mind and want to go back to blazing the career trail he is behind me 150%

Good luck on your decision!

Thank you!! Yes, FH is also so very supportive. I think that's the most important thing. Also, thanks for reminding me that neither decision needs to be permanent.

Of course!

I personally think that starting your newly married life off as a house wife would be alot of fun. Not many people are given an opportunity to start their own business.

I am actually in the process of starting my own event coordination company with a few Wedding and Event planners I worked with when I was working full time.

I consider it a blessing! Alot of women would kill for the opportunity to start their own company:)

Ok...

If I were you I would take the 'promotion' and attempt to start your own business on the side(to see if it is successful). As long as taking this career step isn't a contractual commitment nothing keeps you from staying there. Nothing says you have to stay there and if it continues to 'drain' you then go to your plan B of staying home and doing what you want. Staying at your current job and moving up might benefit you in 2 ways.

1. You may like it as it may be different from what you are currently doing.

2. It gives you more time to decide what you really want to do.

I personally have to work otherwise I would go crazy. I have 13 years left till I can retire and as much as I say I can't wait...I know I will be so bored. While I am currently working now I was thinking about starting my own little business doing my swarovrski table numbers, shoes and couture silk invites so I can keep myself busy after retirement. Provided my business becomes successful!

You will figure it out!

This, have your cake and eat it too!. This way it's less of a 'risk' because when you leave your job, you already know your business is successful.

I would stay were you are because its safe and you will be getting money were as you start your own business you will lost money and you wont get it back until a year later...remembering from accounting ...and remember alot of small business are closing because they are not making the money they need to be making still and the economy is still shakey so that is something to think about too

would it be possible for you to hold-off on changing that the life-altering career change until a year-or-two of actually being married?

marriage in itself is a life altering experience and doing TWO life-altering decisions may be too much for you (or even both of you).

I totally agree with this. Starting a business is hard and a lot of money. I have tried it and it didn't work out so well so I am stuck at my draining biotech company job. Ask for more money since they are giving you more responsibility.

so i missed the original message, so im not sure of the whole story

but with that said, if you want to be in the biotech/professional field (is that true?), it is often difficult to take 'break' and then come back. employers often see large gaps on a resume as a bad thing.

again, not sure of the original story. but keep this in mind

i also recommend reading: bait and switch (author is barbara .....). its one of those books that make you think twice about leaving a job without another job lined up

and true, starting a business is a great idea....but have you gotten your feet wet yet? this is something i would do on teh side, and wait till you have at least a few clients/interest before making the leap.....

but thats just me....

Is the new role a lateral move? If so then no extra money makes sense, but if it is a step up, then they should give you a raise. I see this happen all the time in my business where they give promotions but say they cant afford to give you more money. It is taking advantage of people.
