I have a quick question... When I was 16yrs old I had TWO car accident that damaged my knee.... I went to Chiro n therapy for 1year... But ONE knee.. gave me problems when i was 17yrs old, so I went to Doc and I was diagnose with Meniscus Tear.... Now I have NOT seen the Doc sinve I was 18...
I always have PAIN in my Left knee.... It hurts alot... on scale from 1-10 i would say around 6.5(as of Right now).... sometimes it goes even up to 10 bc I cant even WALK, i have to b limping....
It hurts even more in the COLD, WINTER, When its going to RAIN, or AC....
Am i being STUPID bc i have not go to see a Doctor? Should I see a doctor ASAP?
Do Meniscus Tear increases? like does the cartilage gets worse n worse as time past by without treatment?
Please Help a bride in PAIN..
Thanks
XOXOXO

V, I don't know too much about kneww injuries, but I found this article to be worded really well for people who don't know too much to start, but informative as well, check it out...
Don't let the title put you off, it offers background info as well as explaining the benfits and consequences of surgery.
PS, I think at MINIMUM if it's causing you painm, you should go to the dr. to find out how to treat it so a) it can feel better and b) you can prevent further damage. IT can't hurt to go for a visit.

Hey V!! So i'm by no means yet a Dr. but I'm in my last year of medical school so hopefully i can help answer your question.
A torn meniscus is basically a tear of the C-shaped cartilage that supports your knee join. It can lead to knee instability, the inability to move your knee normally, or persistent knee pain.
How did they diagnose your torn meniscus when you were 17? If they only diagnosed it clinically and NOT by doing an MRI, then you need to get one. Did you ever have an MRI to see how bad the tear was? Even if you had an MRI, if it was a few years ago and you are currently in pain and having symptoms then you should definitely go see an orthopedic doctor. An orthopedic doctor/surgeon specializes in bones, muscles and tears of cartilages and ligaments and will refer you to get another MRI and if needed, he will be able to surgically repair your torn meniscus.
Not to put down to chiropractors or physical therapists, but for a severely torn meniscus that is causing knee instability and excessive pain, no amount of physical therapy will do the trick...you may need surgical repair. Does your knee ever buckle or give out from under you?? If however, it is a minor tear you may definitely need to continue physical therapy and strengthen the muscles and ligaments around your knee joint to support it and taking some anti-inflammatory drugs and put ice on it for 15 min at a time.
sorry for the long msg but i hope that helps...FM if you need anything

I agree if you have insurance go 1st to your primary care doctor...he will refer you most likely to an Orthopedic doctor who can tell you how bad your knee is and whether or not he will prescribe physical therapy or an MRI and hopefully not surgery.

usually before going to an orthopedic surgeon you need to get a referral form from a primary doctor....i can recommend an amazing primary doc if you need one in Glen cove in nassau

What I mean by primary care doctor is a general medicine doctor, family practice doctor or internist that can act like your medical base. Someone who's not a specialist. So even though you don't go yet, it's someone you can go to for this and for other things if god forbid you get sick. It can be a new doctor, it doesn't have to be someone you've been to already. Like Sandy said, your family doctor/primary doctor can refer you to the right specialist

Usually ice helps decrease any active inflammation...I hate to say it but if your knee is already feeling cold and stiff then that isn't the best sign...stiffness and a locked up knee joint might mean it's getting worse...you def should try to make an appointment with a primary care doctor (like jaime said- this is either a family practice dr, or internist) i'll fm you someone that i know accepts your insurance.
