What kinds of medicines do you use when you have a migraine? I used to get them and took Imitrex, but I have a friend that is really suffering and wants to hear what her other options are.
TIA!

hey girls, For mild Migranes (no Nausea and Vomiting) NSAIDS are recommended. For Moderate: Sumatriptan or Ergotamine For prophylaxis (if you get attacks >3time/mo) you can take propranolol or timolol.

The best thing is Imitrex is have both the pill and the little pen thing that you give yourself shots with which I personally feel works better.
I've also used Excederen Migraine and that works too but not when they are really bad.

OMG- Don't ever take Topamax! I was on it for about a month, it made me so unbeliviably emotional, I was NOT myself. I lost my appetite completey (that's not like me at all). I could cry on command! I was on a low dose, but this was my experience!!

Sorry, NSAIDS are Non Steroidal Anti Inflammitory Drugs :) Drugs like Ibuprofen. They work b/c headaches are most likely due dilation of blood vessels in the brain and these drugs will constrict them. Can't speak from personal experience though, thankfully!

Re: NWR: Migraines sufferers
vicodin, I can't take NSaid's so when I have a migraine it is vicodin or percocet depending on how bad it is. Also, I get myself in a dark room and just try and sleep. THey are AWFUL! Thank God I only get them 2 or 3 times a year, and that is too Much!!
If she is a chronic migraine sufferer, topomax is a good option for prevention and treatment

Im on relpax, you only take it when yuo feel one coming on. I call it my miracle pill b/c it's like day and night after i take it. I occasionally use my left-over samples of Maxalt when I feel a small one starting but a majority of the time I need my Relpax. HTH

Re: NWR: Migraines sufferers
I have had migraines for 20 years and tried about everything.
OTC is totally useless for me. Not only does it not work but you take the risk of rebound headaches. Which makes it worst and more frequent.
They are 2 kind of drugs used for migraines. Onset and preventive.
I used to be on 'preventive' medicine. You have plenty of drugs on the market. I used to take beta-blockers. They seemed to work for me. I tried Topamax (for epilepsy) and had to stop after 3 wks. I ended up in the hospital for 3 days for respiratory deficiency. I stopped all preventive type of medicine after that.
For accute onset, I used Relpax. I can't take it anymore since I am PG. It is linked to birth defect. Luckily, migraines usually stops when PG.
Every drug will not work for everybody the same way. I recommend to see a Neurologist and work with him/her.
After talking to several 'fello' migraine sufferers, I have to add that we found similar paterns that trigger migraines:
Sunlight (wear sunglasses) Nitrates and other food (deli meat, bacon) Damp/mold (basement, etc..) Change of season. Tendency to get seasonal allergies Travel Stress Lack of sleep

Re: NWR: Migraines sufferers
For onset I take Relpax. Usually I'll take it when I feel the headache coming on, which lucky for me, is usually the night before so I can take the Relpax right before bed. It does cause drowsiness which you'll find in most migrain meds. Other than that, I like Excedrin Migrain, but I'll usually take 3 of them and it usually takes about 1-2 hrs to kick in.
