NWR: Mourning the loss of my dog

Original post by NapaValleyGirl

I haven't posted much in a few days because I was away in California for my best friend's wedding. I came home late Sunday evening and Monday morning I called my mother to ask how our dog Muffin was doing. Muffin is our dog of almost 10 years. She is a beautiful lab/shepard mix that we rescued.
Last week, she was feeling ill and my parents took her to the vet. They did some xrays and found that she had ingested what looked like string. Muffin had never been the type of dog to chew on things or eat objects that wasn't food....It was unusual.
They performed emergency surgery on her on Thursday and she was recovering well. My parents visited her every day and she was alert and wagging her tail. On saturday my parents went to the vet and wanted to take her home but she was running a slight fever and promised my parents they could take her home on monday.
Sunday my brothers went to visit her at around 3 pm and the office was closed. Which was upsetting because my parents paid for 24 hour care. Monday morning they called to tell us she passed away.
We are devestated. I left my office in NYC to go to LI to say goodbye to my girl.
In the past, I've seen people leave the vets office crying and in the back of my head I always feared that one day it would be us.... This past Monday we were the family that was crying at the vets office.
I'm so overwhelmingly sad and my heart is broken. I was planning on having our family's two dogs (Muffin the lab and weezer the pekingnese) involved in our wedding in september. I worry about the second dog and hope that she will be ok with the loss of her buddy....
Anyway, I just needed to talk. I've been on my couch crying because I don't want to wake up FH....

omg cindy, i'm so sorry. I know what you're going through and it's so hard. Our pets are members of our family just like our own siblings and it's an enormous loss when they pass. I wish you and your family comfort in this time.

Thank you so much

I am so incredibly sorry...I truly understand the loss you are feeling...we lost my Miniature Schnauzer a few years ago after having him for 14 years. It was an awful time in my life..and I remember it hurting more than the loss of anything in my life. I know that this cannot make you feel better, but time does heal....and about 3 months after my pup's passing, my family got a puppy...who is now 4 years old...we did not get her to replace him...but it certainly helped to be able to give a lot of love to another dog...they provide so much happiness in our lives, and take comfort in the fact that out of all the people your pup could have spent his life with, he was lucky enough to get to spend it with you and your family. Again I am sorry for your loss

Thank you for your words. It's very comforting to know that others know what I'm going through...

I am so sorry.. i too can relate... my dog was my best friend in the whole world, and only true 'dog people' really understand this love... My dog was only 7 and so happy and lively one minute and the next thing I know I'm driving 90 mph on the LIE at 2am to the 24 hour animal hospital to try to save him.. i lost him to respiratory failure (?)... still don't understand what that is and why it happened to my seemingly perfectly healthy 7 year old dog... I still think about him and miss him every single day. Again, sorry for your loss of Muffin..

poor puppy I am so sorry for your loss! It is so hard to loose a pet who has been like a family member. I have lost two myself, a 17 year old dog( I got her at 12, we had to put her down two years ago ) and a puppy that had the dog flu ( he was only 3 months ) - both were very different deaths , yet I was devistated for both.
It will take some time, but you will get through this!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. I find so much comfort knowing that other people have experienced this. I am so sorry for the loss of your dog as well... Muffin was a happy and healthy dog two weeks ago and it's so surreal to know that the next week, she is gone....

I'm sooo sorry for your loss. I completely understand how you feel. It's hard to lose a pet that is part of the family. I went through that 3 years ago and it was just horrible.

Please know that you are i my thoughts and prayers.

Aww I am so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how broken hearted you must feel. My family had a german shephard that passed away at the age of 14. He was definitely like another child in the family. He passed away years ago but I still miss him so much. Just try to focus on the good during this time, that he was a lucky dog to have such a loving family, and that he lived a good life! I know that helped me.
