NWR: Mourning the loss of my dog

Original post by NapaValleyGirl

I haven't posted much in a few days because I was away in California for my best friend's wedding. I came home late Sunday evening and Monday morning I called my mother to ask how our dog Muffin was doing. Muffin is our dog of almost 10 years. She is a beautiful lab/shepard mix that we rescued.
Last week, she was feeling ill and my parents took her to the vet. They did some xrays and found that she had ingested what looked like string. Muffin had never been the type of dog to chew on things or eat objects that wasn't food....It was unusual.
They performed emergency surgery on her on Thursday and she was recovering well. My parents visited her every day and she was alert and wagging her tail. On saturday my parents went to the vet and wanted to take her home but she was running a slight fever and promised my parents they could take her home on monday.
Sunday my brothers went to visit her at around 3 pm and the office was closed. Which was upsetting because my parents paid for 24 hour care. Monday morning they called to tell us she passed away.
We are devestated. I left my office in NYC to go to LI to say goodbye to my girl.
In the past, I've seen people leave the vets office crying and in the back of my head I always feared that one day it would be us.... This past Monday we were the family that was crying at the vets office.
I'm so overwhelmingly sad and my heart is broken. I was planning on having our family's two dogs (Muffin the lab and weezer the pekingnese) involved in our wedding in september. I worry about the second dog and hope that she will be ok with the loss of her buddy....
Anyway, I just needed to talk. I've been on my couch crying because I don't want to wake up FH....

Losing a pet is just like losing a best friend or family member. I feel for you

I am so so so sorry. I know how hard this is, having been through this twice. After the last, we adopted a rescue dog in honor of my last dog. It feels wonderful to know I saved another life in her memory....knowing that got me through the absolutely most painful experience of my life. i know it doesn't feel like it now, but it does get better over time. I'm sure that your dog had a fantastic life in a very loving home and that is what matters the most. Again, so sorry for the loss.

Thank you so much for your kind words Angela. I am still shocked that I won't see Muffin when I walk through my front door. I know it will get better with time and we gave her the most amazing life. I just wish she was still with us. It wasn't her time to go yet....

I know. I actually found out that they were closed on Sunday at 12 pm!!!! Which means Muffin was alone from 12 noon until at least 9 am the next morning!?!?!! I know it won't bring her back but I am so angry. My parents wanted to take her home. I wish we had taken her home and then brought her back to the vet the folowing day. I feel so guilty...
