NWR: Mourning the loss of my dog

Original post by NapaValleyGirl

I haven't posted much in a few days because I was away in California for my best friend's wedding. I came home late Sunday evening and Monday morning I called my mother to ask how our dog Muffin was doing. Muffin is our dog of almost 10 years. She is a beautiful lab/shepard mix that we rescued.
Last week, she was feeling ill and my parents took her to the vet. They did some xrays and found that she had ingested what looked like string. Muffin had never been the type of dog to chew on things or eat objects that wasn't food....It was unusual.
They performed emergency surgery on her on Thursday and she was recovering well. My parents visited her every day and she was alert and wagging her tail. On saturday my parents went to the vet and wanted to take her home but she was running a slight fever and promised my parents they could take her home on monday.
Sunday my brothers went to visit her at around 3 pm and the office was closed. Which was upsetting because my parents paid for 24 hour care. Monday morning they called to tell us she passed away.
We are devestated. I left my office in NYC to go to LI to say goodbye to my girl.
In the past, I've seen people leave the vets office crying and in the back of my head I always feared that one day it would be us.... This past Monday we were the family that was crying at the vets office.
I'm so overwhelmingly sad and my heart is broken. I was planning on having our family's two dogs (Muffin the lab and weezer the pekingnese) involved in our wedding in september. I worry about the second dog and hope that she will be ok with the loss of her buddy....
Anyway, I just needed to talk. I've been on my couch crying because I don't want to wake up FH....

OMG i'm so sorry! I can't even imagine how you must feel... your poor dog. what went wrong, did they tell you??

I'm SO sorry. I just took my cat to get spayed and was traumatized; I can't even imagine losing a pet.

Thank you.... I wish we knew what went wrong. The only thing we can have done is a post mortem. I'm just confused as to how my dog was alert and wagging her tail on Saturday and gone on Sunday night. It's hard to comprehend.

Thank you for your thoughts and for reaching out....

I am so incredibly sorry...I truly understand the loss you are feeling...we lost my Miniature Schnauzer a few years ago after having him for 14 years. It was an awful time in my life..and I remember it hurting more than the loss of anything in my life. I know that this cannot make you feel better, but time does heal....and about 3 months after my pup's passing, my family got a puppy...who is now 4 years old...we did not get her to replace him...but it certainly helped to be able to give a lot of love to another dog...they provide so much happiness in our lives, and take comfort in the fact that out of all the people your pup could have spent his life with, he was lucky enough to get to spend it with you and your family. Again I am sorry for your loss

Thank you for your words. It's very comforting to know that others know what I'm going through...

I am glad I can help a tiny tiny bit

I am so sorry to hear about your dog's passing. I have a dog and I know I will be just as heartbroken when / if she gets ill - I don't know what I'll do.

i cant imagine how you are feeling....our dog is our BABY - my BABY - i got her when i was 18 because i needed something to love - then i met FH and he bonded with her too - we are 100% 'dog people' she came with us when we moved into our apartment and ever since then we've been a little family and i joke that she is the only thing i have from my childhood home - she is my rock and i dread the day when she will pass - i unfortunately have had many family members pass away but i know that when it is time for my baby it will be the hardest on me because she is with me every day and i love her with all my heart - so i really cannot imagine how you are feeling right now - lots of hugs

Thank you so much for reaching out. I can tell by your pictures that you are a 'dog person' and I know that you empathize with the way I feel.
I really appreciate your supportive words. Muffin was my rock as well. So kind. She was my 'gentle giant' and gave my family unconditional love. Her passing is a great loss and I know in time i'll feel better but right now, I just feel so sad...
