NWR: Moving out of New York

Original post by curiousgeorge

Are any of you girls thinking about or are moving out of New York after your wedding. We are trying to decide if this is best. We are looking at other cities and my Fh can make the same amount of money he makes here and the houses are three times the size and half the price! The only thing is, there Is NO body, no friends, no family, just us, there is a possibility my family will gradually move south but not for another 2 years. But I will be able to have my children and stay at home with them and live such a comfortable life! Has any of you girls experienced this? Or are doing this? We are considering living just outside of Atlanta Georgia.

we moved to Charlotte, NC right after the wedding. we love it here! its cheaper, cleaner, and everything is new and pretty. we are renting for now and saving for a house. plus, i am going to school here at UNCC for my masters in school counseling. its close to impossible to get a job as a school counselor on LI, so we knew we would be moving for my job eventually.

\

I am also looking into moving to NC. I have a masters in school counseling, i graduated last may and i still dont have a job. I hear that it is about 200 applicants to the 10 positions available on long island. In fact, the only people who have a job as a school counselor are the people who left NY (with the execption of maybe like 4 from my graduating class of 15). Its crazy and frustrating.

I am so tempted to leave. But as curiousgeorge said, no friends, no family, there. so torn .. especially after just spending easter with my family taht is only an hour away!.

Its so hard....But The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to move. Someone posted how our children are going to have a hard time buying a house on LI in the future....I dont want my kids to have to stress ou or worry. Plus Im predicting that NC, SC, GA and FL are all going to be booming and the house prices are just going to rise up and up there also....so the sooner the better.

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

we most likely will move down to slidell, louisiana after the wedding (40 minutes from new orleans). my fiance can not only get a better job there, but my whole family lives down there. plus you can practically buy a mansion for the price of a normal home here. if we ever want a home, and a bunch of kids we will most likely have to do it. otherwise we're stuck here living in my dads house. I've lived down there, and even in cali for awhile but to leave for more than a month is scary.

when I lived in cali I had no one, and it was pretty bad. I love cali to death but it was really lonely and that was only a month. and when I lived in louisiana by myself, even with family it still felt pretty lonely with no friends, and no fiance at the time. plus I missed the driving around seeing familiar places, and running into friends everywhere. it's def hard to leave ny.

friends mean a lot to me, I can't ever imagine not being able to see them daily, or weekly. than again everyday I miss my mom insanely. I am the biggest mama's girl ever lol. hopefully instead of the moving down, I get her to move up. it's not the whole family but eh.

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

We keep the idea of moving out of state in the back of our minds. We would much rather stay in New York but we'll see what happens. Many people are planning to move including my parents. SO you never know. There may be nothing left in NY to make us stay.

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

We will eventually move off of Long Island and out of the NYC-metro area, but we're not sure where yet. I'm guessing it won't be for another 5 years yet or so.

We have some ideas (I love NC and we both love the Finger Lakes and PA), but we're not sure just yet.

I'm a lawyer, so until I've been practicing for 5 years, if we move, I'm limited to states in which I'm licensed or taking the bar exam for the new state. (And seeing as I'm only licensed in NY and soon in DC, that leaves us few options). If we opt to move somewhere in NY, though, like the finger lakes, we could move sooner.

The idea of moving away from NY doesn't really bother me terribly right now... but in the past 10 years, just about everyone in my family has left Long Island. Both of my brothers moved out of state (PA and MD). My aunts and uncles for the most part retired and moved... Once my parents retire and move after this summer, it'll just be us and a couple of cousins left in NY. Yes, we'll miss our friends, but even our friends are spread out around the country right now...

The problem now is that I wouldn't make what I make in NY anywhere else -- FH could make the same or more (lucky duck). We have to do our reserach to decide. FH is going to go for him MBA next year, too, so we'll be in this area at least another two to three years while he finishes that up. I am anxious to live somewhere a bit more rural (and have my horses in my back yard!), but we're going to take our time deciding where to live!

i wouldnt bet on that - the new home market is going down in those areas, and it is much harder to sell an existing home (one that is lived in already) than new, bc everyone from the north moving there is buying a new home.

and they have so much land in NC and GA, they have pleanty of room to build - LI is so expensive bc the land costs $$ because we are almost out of it!

and FL - homeowners insurance is $$$ and so are the taxes (now you pay 3% or 4% of your purchase price in taxes per year).

if you decide to move down south, good luck! But i wouldnt bet that prices will 'boom' down there - the opposite is happening.

eta: and I also know people who moved to NC without jobs and it took months to find a decent job. the job market isnt that strong there - but if you find a job down there before you go that is the best option.

FH and I are moving to the Philadelphia suburbs...the houses are much less expensive, but pay is comparable to here. It's also not very far from NY, so coming home for a weekend won't be a problem.

The cost of living anywhere other than NY is soooo much cheaper. As is real estate etc. Im really excited!

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

FH and I talk about this allll the time! He has never moved away from his family before, I have. So its not as big of a deal for me as it would be for him. But we want to be able to liive in a nice house when we have kids and even if we end up making 100 grand a year, we don't see how we will afford a nice house on LI or the NY area. So maybe a year or two after the wedding we may apply in places like Boston, Chicago, and North Carolina. Haha FH also said Nashville cus he is into music- but not country. But you can get a $500,000 house there that would be like $3 million here, so he said eh would learn to like country music if he has too. But it is def frustrating that NY and the surrounding areas are soooo super expensive!

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

FH and I have talked about moving out of NY since it is really hard for young couples in NY to start out. It's too expensive.

Our families will forever be in NY, but eventually we would definitely like to leave. We want to be able to enjoy life a little more at a more relaxed pace.

If's you think it's the right decision for you, then go for it. In the end, you have to consider what is right for both of you and what you want--family can visit and friends can be made.

I agree with others, the prices of homes down south are only getting lower! Right now its definitly a buyers market!

FH and I think about PA all the time, since it is a lot cheaper, but only a few hours away... as smart as it would be, I still don't want to leave my family, he doesn't want to leave his, and I am def. a new yorker at heart... I don't know if I could put up with other places lol...

we think about it all the time. its such a scary and yet fun idea. my brother lives in Florida and we like it there . I have a lot of friends from college who live in NC and we have some family in parts of Georgia. My best friend said if we moved to NC she'd follow us...we want to move at some point...want to buy a nice house and start a family...

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

A friend of mine just moved to PA. She was hesitant of course but she's loving it. She also told me there is such a demand for nurses that pay would probably be comparable to LI pay too. At least I'd know someone if I went there!

What are some of the towns you are looking into? Phili suburbs sound like a good alternative since it is not too far away.

We are planning on moving to NC after our wedding. My family will not stay in ny forever, my parents are already looking to move to florida so I have nothing to lose!

We're moving to NC in the beginning of 08. This is one of the reasons we decided to have a smaller wedding. FH can transfer his job w/ the same pay so it's almost like why wouldn't we? The houses are amazing and I have no family in NY anymore, so there wasn't much of an incentive to stay...

We think about moving out of NY, but if we did it wouldn't be for about 5 years. I love NY can't imagine living anywhere else but not sure where we will end up. I work in the fashion industry which is in the city, so I cannot leave at this time in my life, while FH is a plumber so he can find a job in any state.
Also all of FH's silbling either live or are moving out of state and is it hard b/c we rarely get to see his nieces or nephews. But my whole family is here.
It is crazy expensive to live in NY . After the wedding we wil be saving for a house and then once we have the $$ saved I guess we will decide then what would be better for us.
However we thinkg about it all the time and it is so mind boggling

We thought about it.. DH would not be able to really do what he does in NC or GA or any of those places a lot of people are moving to. And like you said, ALL of our friends are here, our familes are (well mine is on LI). His family lives upstate, where the cost of living is MUCH MUCH cheaper and I asked him if he would want to live there, and the answer was a definite NO. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. HOnestly even though we thought about it, I couldn't imagine moving away from everyone I know and starting over again knowing not knowing a single soul. I might be living in big new house but thats where I would be spending all my time and I would be planning my next trip to NY to see my family and friends.

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

We moved out of NY already as well. The cost of living on LI is ridiculous for young people and honestly, we really wanted to go out and see places and experience things before we have kids and have to settle someplace. I decided that right after college I wanted a HUGE change from NY, so I moved to Oregon. I have to say that it was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Its really a different world out here, and I really feel that I've grown and come into my own after leaving. However, I was in the same boat and knew NO ONE! All of my family and friends are still on LI, and I can't just take a weekend and visit. I would definitely say that moving somewhere within a days drive of NY is the best way to go if you will want to see your family and friends all the time. But you will also make friends wherever you are, even though it might take a little time.
But good luck with whatever you decide to do!
