NWR: Moving out of New York

NWR: Moving out of New York

Are any of you girls thinking about or are moving out of New York after your wedding. We are trying to decide if this is best. We are looking at other cities and my Fh can make the same amount of money he makes here and the houses are three times the size and half the price! The only thing is, there Is NO body, no friends, no family, just us, there is a possibility my family will gradually move south but not for another 2 years. But I will be able to have my children and stay at home with them and live such a comfortable life! Has any of you girls experienced this? Or are doing this? We are considering living just outside of Atlanta Georgia.

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

FH and I unfortunately have to move out of New York once we get married. Depending on what airline he's flying for we have to live near a major hub. I'm scared to move because it will be just us and I want to have family there with us especially when we decide to have kids but I think both of our parents want to move away from LI anyway. So Newark, Houston, Cleveland, Cincinnati, or Atlanta here I come!

Im scared too, but excited at the same time. I know we will be making a GREAT financial decision. Long Island is just so unfairly expensive. Its the same thing that it will just be us, no one else!! My parents want to move also but not for another 2 years until my youngest brother graduates high school. Its a serious decision. I think about it allllll the time!!!!!

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

Were not moving out of new york...Currently FH and I both live in Queens...Fh has mentioned a couple times moving to Massapequa, and now with his new job promotion and being in charge of LI for his job it looks like more of a possibility...Personally for me its even hard thinking of moving to Massapequa lol, and its not that far lol, i have issues.

But if you two think this is a decision you both would be happy with then go for it...I do understand you get alot more for your money elsewhere but also think of everything else overall.

FH has a house in the poconos, its 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 2 living rooms...For the price it was amazing of course...but I could never picture living there. We do love to go for the weekend to get away and relax but thats as far as it goes. But were also different people, i dont know what would be right for you and your FH and if you two would like that environment. I would say if you are really interested in this, go look at other cities, but not just at the houses...Is it a city you two would like to live, do you like the surroundings and is it a town you think you two can live in. Are you two ok with seeing family and friends less than you do now?...I guess both of you should sit down and talk about everything, the pros and cons and see what is the best decision for you. Good luck

We are planning on moving to NC after our wedding. My family will not stay in ny forever, my parents are already looking to move to florida so I have nothing to lose!

It's definitely going to be hard not seeing our families as much as we used to and I have to admit I feel nothing could compare to Long Island and living where you grew up but in the end I think FH and I will be fine. We'll have each other. Besides, with all of the great flight benefits we'll get from him being a pilot, we can just fly anyone out to us whenever we want and vice versa, we can just go to them!

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

we are!

but not for cheaper living...

we're moving to San Diego right after the honeymoon. he finished his master's in december, and i'm finishing mine in may so we will both be looking for jobs, plus we have no kids, no real obligations here in ny... so we decided that there wouldn't be a better time in our lives to do it! we only plan on staying for about three years though, because once we have children we want to be close to our families, both of whom live on LI. we know we won't see our friends and family so much, but we also know we'll be happy just the two of us.

Well after the wedding we may very well be moving BACK to NY, after i finish school here in san francisco. However FH's work is really here so im not sure how well it work out, plus i have learned to love California!!!! He would always have to fly back here which i know would be a major pain after a while. But we will see. This is something we really need to tal about. You also need to weigh the pros and cons in your sistuation and take everything into account when moving! Good Luck!

you just have to be careful because yeah, the houses are cheaper, but so is the pay. FH and i moved down to florida to get out of debt when in reality we got into so much more (he transferred his job and was making the very least 1,000 dollars less a month!!) and now we're going back to ny.. well he's already back. i dont know about you, but i think ny is the greatest place to live.. you might not think so when you're there, but when you're gone, you wanna go back.

totally agree. we moved to austin because i wanted to take a year off between undergrad and grad school and he wanted to check out the job market here. basically we hate it. the town's just not for us (WAAAY too small and too much football and drinking), the job market *****, pay *****, and while rent is cheaper, utilities are a LOT more expensive - we paid 30 for water and 30 for electric in brooklyn with the rest covered by the landlord, here we pay 40 for water, 150 for electric, plus we pay for gas and heat and non negotiable extermination and trash removal fees (and we ALWAYS have bugs and the trash is never picked up). needless to say, we're moving back as soon as my job ends in may.

granted, not all places are like this, but just do a fair amount of research before you move. if you like the place and are happy, then even without family and friends you'll be ok. if you're miserable, then the lack of a social network will make it even worse. maybe try vacationing/visiting the place before you move there and check everything out.

FH and I currently own a house in NY. After the wedding, I am sure we will eventually move out of NY... we just moved my friends to Alpharetta, GA and I fell in love with it. We can have an amazing life and be comfortable having a family there.

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

WOW.. we just moved to Vegas.

I lived in a small town most my life ( in Hawaii) and was so tired of the cost of living. We have been talking about moving to the midwest because it is so cheap to live. The thought was really scary.. but .. fate decided for us. Both my BF and I lost our jobs on the same day.. so we picked up and moved. Vegas is a pit stop. I have 3 kids that will be joining us, but in the meantime, the cost of living is so much less here and... my BF is making DOUBLE what he made in Hawaii.. so not everywhere, is the pay lower.

Im starting to meet people and really its all good. I am enjoying being home, and making our home comfortable.. being the 'housewife' because I dont have to work!

As far as family goes.. my family is scattered anyhow and really.. we are making our own family.. and the others will be visiting us now. It is working just fine and we ..so far... are very happy with our decision.

Good luck to you on whatever you decide.

ps.. another reason I wanted to move is because I am trying to think of my kids' future. They will NEVER be able to buy a house where we are from, so I would rather get them settled and established somewhere on the mainland .......that will be ALL of our futures..

I'm moving to Florida. FH is already there. We will decide ultimately where we want to live when we buy a house. I have one more year of school left and after that we will decide.

we moved to Charlotte, NC right after the wedding. we love it here! its cheaper, cleaner, and everything is new and pretty. we are renting for now and saving for a house. plus, i am going to school here at UNCC for my masters in school counseling. its close to impossible to get a job as a school counselor on LI, so we knew we would be moving for my job eventually.

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

We already moved out of NY and spent some time living and working in Baltimore, MD... but unfortunately had to move back for my job. We are definitely planning on moving away again within a few years. We feel the quality of life is sooo much better. You can afford a house without any big financial strain. There are also little areas that are just building up and communities that are growing. Other places seem to be experiencing a fresh beginning and that is something that you don't see here at all. Yes, you may not have every chain store within a 5 foot radius and you may miss your pizza and bagels ( God knows I did...but you will find a slower, calmer place to raise your children and give them the kind of life you could only dream of for them. That's JMO...I think it's a great option for anyone to just consider.

Also.. we saw our families a few times a month since we only lived 3 hours away... you could easily take any weekend to visit.

Re: NWR: Moving out of New York

I lived in Chicago for a few years before I met FH... yes, it was cheaper rent-wise, but I would never do it again unless I absolutely had no other options and FH got the job opportunity of a lifetime with a NY sized paycheck. I would hate to spend every single vacation day flying to NY to visit family. I prefer to live here and visit family for dinners and days out and spend my vacation time in new places and relaxing. I found when I lived in IL, everytime I had a minute off - I was back here. After a while, it gets annoying. Plus the price of flying here all the time more than made up for the 'benefit' of cheaper rent. My job paid less than it did here, gas was similar, so was food - in fact food was sometimes more expensive and I couldn't get a decent bagel and how I missed thin crusted pizza! FH gets the itch all the time b/c he has the burden of the mortgage, but I tell him that my bills and his other bills don't change just b/c our address does so I prefer to be where I can earn the most. We would like a bigger house, but we are thinking eastern Nassau county as both our territories for work are in western Nassau. In my own experience... everyone who moves out - eventually moves back... maybe it's just the people I know, but really it's what happens. Only the prices are even more of a shock when you've been away for a while. One of my good friends from high school is going through it now - she did the NC thing for many years - in fact her parent's moved to Atlanta and my friend is still coming back here.

I am also looking into moving to NC. I have a masters in school counseling, i graduated last may and i still dont have a job. I hear that it is about 200 applicants to the 10 positions available on long island. In fact, the only people who have a job as a school counselor are the people who left NY (with the execption of maybe like 4 from my graduating class of 15). Its crazy and frustrating.

I am so tempted to leave. But as curiousgeorge said, no friends, no family, there. so torn .. especially after just spending easter with my family taht is only an hour away!.
